WOuld we get if we ended up getting Miami's first and taken McFadden?
I think it would be too big and would mess up our plans to sign Newman next year and Ware the year after, but I would like to hear our resident Cap Genious AdamJT weigh in.

Hard to say exactly what the cap hits would be because we don't know how the deal would be structured, but like I said in a previous thread, Jamarcus Russell got 6yr/60M last year so you can bet DMac would want somewhere in the 6yr/65M range. Thats a average of almost 11m a year for a RB. I'm pretty sure it would make a guy who has never played a down the highest paid RB in the NFL from the start. There is a reason NFL teams don't draft RB's #1 overall these days, and this trade makes zero sense.

Thats why Parcells wants out of that spot so badly. Who in this draft is worth that kind of investment? You going to give Glenn Dosrey, or Chris Long or Sedrick Ellis that kind of money? One of the crappy QB's? In this day and age I don't think teams really have any desire to own the #1 overall pick, its just not a pick worth taking the risk on.

There is no such thing as a 100% guaranteed bust proof draft choice. And when you are looking at that much money for someone who MIGHT be a bust, and even if not might only be an average player, OUCH!!!!
Look at all the top 5 picks over the last 10 years that have NOT made it to the Pro Bowl. And its going to get worse each year.

No kidding. Just another thing I would have like to seen in the last bargaining agreement. Rookie salaries for those day one picks are completely out of line.

I like the way the NBA makes rookies earn their big pay day first.

I agree. These big contracts going to rookies who no one knows if they can even cut it in the NFL is ridicules.

Reggie Bush and Mike Vick didn't ? Please.

Thing about the NBA is their contracts are guaranteed.

The cap hit would likely be a little over $3 million in '08 and closer to $4 million in '09.

isn't there a rookie pool that no team can spend more than the limit on their overall draft class? i think the problem is the 'non-guaranteed' money the player won't likely see in the end if a bust.

Yeah, after the draft, teams are allotted an amount by the league based on how many picks they had and where the picks were located.

First pick this year got 30+ million for 6 years. Thats only the signing bonus.
While the rookie cap would keep it down the first year, after that it keeps getting worse. 6 years is all we can spread it out. I never found out how much Russell cost the Raiders in cap space this year, but McFadden will probably end up costing at least as much if not more.

Russell's cap hit was $2.96 million in '07. Mario Williams's cap hit was $2.9 million in '06.

Russell got 30+ million signing bonus yet the cap hit was less then 3 million? that leaves 27+ million to be spread over the next 5 years? THAT is going to hurt. And that is not counting the rest of the money in that contract.

Russell didn't even get a signing bonus. His cap numbers are $2,976,320, $3,720,400, $4,464,480, $5,208,560, $5,952,640 and $6,696,720. Everything else in his contract is based on incentives.
