Very happy with this draft obviously, I give it an A. My wife hated it, mostly because I went into a trance at dinner like the movie “Close Encounters” and built a mashed potatoes statue of Will McClay.

The picks:

1 DE Taco Carlton, Michigan

Dane Brugler calls him another Justin Tuck, who had 4 seasons of double digit sacks and one Pro Bowl. If I had known he played his senior year with an ankle injury I would have been pounding on the table for him before the draft. A big bonus IMO is that he will likely be able to play either side of the DL and Marinelli’s scheme is perfect for giving him reps without the pressure of starting.

2 CB Chidobe Awuzie, Colorado

Rated as a high 2nd by Brugler, Awuzie is a guy that could start if you needed it but will be the 4th CB on the depth chart. Rated by some as the best zone CB in this draft, great value pick and very likely a starter in 2018.

3 CB Jourdan Lewis, Michigan

Very talented player, likely takes Scandrick’s place next year as a top slot CB. Rated as a 2nd rounder by Bruger. Likely goes at least a round higher if not for the DV accusation, which the team undoubtedly checked out and doesn’t seem that credible from a cursory reading.

4 WR Ryan Switzer, North Carolina

If you knew Beasley was going to be what he was, would you spend a 4th on him? Answer: Yes.

If you could eliminate the turnovers Lucky Whitehead had in exchange for a 4th, would you do it? Answer: Yes.

Knowing 2 of our 3 losses last year were by a total of 4 points, would you have traded all the fair catch returns for 2 return TDs, if it cost you a 4th? Answer: Yes.

Switzer gives you all three. Dak Prescott is a guy that uses every tool on his belt and this is one more tool, acquired at a low price.

6 S Xavier Woods, Louisiana Tech

A guy I would have been happy with as our 4th round pick, he has starting potential down the road. Rated by Brugler as a 3rd or 4th rounder. Smart student of the game that will learn more playing with Byron Jones, a very smart student of the game.

Plus we basically got him for one of our FA compensation picks next year. We acquired him for a 5th next year that should be about 20 spots higher than the pick we used on Woods – and we will have several 4th and 5th round comp picks next year. Woods will give you this year what Wilcox gave you last year, but will more range and less hitting.

6 CB Marquez White

Rated by Brugler as a 4th or 5th rounder. Good CB skills but needs more coaching and significant time in the weight room. He will get both on our practice squad, similar to the redshirt year Dwayne Harris or Ron Leary had.

7 DT Joey Ivie

Potentially a 1T this year but most likely a Practice Squad guy. Marinelli found Terrell McClain on his couch and made him into a player that was our best DL at times last year. Give Marinelli some time and the same skill set with Ivie and let him work his magic.

7 WR Noah Brown

Brugler rated him as a 5th rounder, very raw and very talented with essentially only one season of college football under his belt. Perfect Practice Squad candidate.

7 DT Jordan Carrell

See Joey Ivie above. Marinelli + Practice Squad + Time = Something. (maybe).

Was it the same ankle injury that supposedly affected Taco's combine performance?
Do you know whether he was injury prone the year before?

I have about reached my limit with injury prone.

Seriously the guy plated with a sprained ankle. If it were a high sprain, then those last a while. If he toughted it out and still produced, then so much the better.

But please, can the mods or the owner of this site ban the term injury prone?

Ever seen a player with a high ankle sprain?

Dez had one and missed a quite a few games.

This guy played. I don't see where anything in this dynamic suggests INJURY PRONE.

I don't know about the combine, my point is that he played most of his Senior year and had 8.5 sacks against top teams, all while playing through the injury. If he is 100% healthy and has 15 sacks last year I doubt he would still be available at 28.

Either Jerry or Stephen said they think he is completely healthy so it sounds like this ankle injury was the only issue he has had.

Nice job on the evaluation. We will see how it works out but my 2 favorites are Woods and Switzer because of their intensity. Guys like this can infect the team with their attitude and bring us to the next level

You have to think that was a big part of the Dallas draft evaluation, you saw several players like Woods drafted that that are already very good at film study. With more coaching and guys like Byron Jones as mentors you have to think they will acclimate fast.

They all seem like high character guys also, the writeups on Switzer were positive but I hadn't see him listed as that intense and focused until I read the writeup Broaddus did on DC.com. That goes a long way, especially if he is going to be the primary PR and KR this year.

Each pick is just oozing with intangibles and high character (and yes I'm including Jourdan Lewis).

You go down the list of our picks positives and you see things like: Hard worker. Loves the game. Football smart with high IQ. Natural player with a knack for the position. Loves to compete. Never backs down. It really stood out with Awuzie, Lewis, Switzer, and Woods.

Happy with the draft but the Tuck comparisons with Charlton don't work for me.

Tuck was a much quicker cat more athletic cat than Charlton. Tuck ran a 4.62 and then a 4.56 wind aided 40 at his pro-day. Plus a 4.29 20SS compared to Charlton's 4.39.

That's not to say Charlton can't be a great DE for us. I just don't think the comparisons to Tuck make much sense to me.
