Sooooooo Cut Dak, fire Garrett, Maher sucks and Zeke was overdrafted.

Or maybe its really about execution, huh?

This game was a return to the Cowboys brand of football and they finally executed it. It starts with the OL and Zeke controlling the game with the running game. That gives Dak time to throw, which makes him so much better. Then the defense made a lot of solid stops over the course of the game. That turns a one score win into a two score win (scores 3, 4 & 5 were about turnovers and luck for this game IMO).

Its really not all about the coaching, its about the normal process of the OL gelling with new players and a new techniques. Conner Williams is developing, Looney is getting more reps and Lael Collins is adjusting to the new technique. Everything flows from the OL executing and they did. Its a good sign going forward.

Other notes –

We can officially declare the 2nd round pick of Jaylon Smith a successful gamble. He was everywhere - hitting like a truck, rushing the passer and forcing a fumble. Very few LBs combine power and finesse like Jaylon does and we got him in the 2nd round. That’s rare.

Our DL is going to hold up well over the course of the season while other teams deal with injuries and fatigued starters. Guys like Taco and Gregory didn’t put up much in the stat sheet but were active and contributed a lot. When David Irving and Maliek Collins are fully healthy, our pass rush is going to be very, very good.

I think the light is finally coming on for Gallup and I think they would have gone to him more in a close game. Hurns sucks and Twill contributed nothing, going forward they should give most of the reps to Gallup, Beasley and Thompson, while increasing snaps for Tavon Austin.

In the Salary Cap NFL you have positions where you have to be “good enough” for a season until development or draft picks upgrade the position. TE and Safety are those spots for us but its like the RB position in 2016. Dallas got flamed by fans here for letting DeMarco walk and signing Darren McFadden, but McFadden finished 5th in rushing yards that year and it was unquestionably the right decision. The jury is still out on S and TE this year but sometimes you have to construct a roster that way.

We have four TEs and IMO three are backups with the fourth a Practice Squad guy. Swaim is developing better timing with Dak though and Rico had a good catch (and it took two defenders and a DB push to bring him down). Jarwin missed a catchable pass but one of Rico, Jarwin and Schultz will be a solid starter next year after we muddle through this season.

Who was the best CB on the field? Byron Jones or Jaylen Ramsey?

Also Anthony Brown played very well as a starter, especially for a guy considered our 4th CB coming into camp. When he avoids the little mistakes and penalties he can play well, which I attribute 90% of to Kris Richard.

Are we still OK keeping our 2nd round pick and playing Xavier Woods? I know I am.

LVE is still a beast and he is still only 50% of the player he will be next year. With more game knowledge, added weight and playing next to Jaylon he is going to be a monster.

The key with Dak Prescott has been written many times, when he has no protection he rushes throws and loses a lot of his accuracy. There is a ton of things to like about Dak’s game and fans need to keep QB development in perspective. Dak’s game is efficiency while Romo’s was the big play. And when Romo became a starter (much later in this career than Dak), it took him two full years to learn to just throw the ball away when a play broke down. His first two seasons he would try to create a spectacular play out of a broken one. Occasionally he would, but more often than not it would just create a bigger problem. It took Romo two years to just throw the ball away, its not surprising that Dak has a segment of the game that will take time to learn also.

Good stuff
My biggest concern is having a receiver who can step up when a team decides to take Cole out of the game
He’s almost impossible to cover if you don’t bracket him and if you bracket him that leaves others in single coverage. Someone has to step up and make a team pay or a group of guys

I do think the strategy can work where you have a bunch of OK WRs rather than a dominant #1 (and Dez wasnt that last year anyway). But its still a big shift from the glory years of Dez to this year where two of your three top guys in Hearns and TWill both play like crap.

People rolling out the hype train after the Cowboys 3rd win in what looks like another 8-8 season. I can appreciate positivity, but when a bad game is "just one game" then the same thing applies to good games. Nothing is solved. Nothing has really changed. This team has been a roller coaster for 8.5 years and will continue to be such as long as Garrett is at the helm.

yes still fire Garett even if we make the playoffs..if we arent in a NFCG this season, fire him, hes had his chances and its been too much of the same rollercoaster.. Dak well jury still out..Ive always been high on Dak, and was a supporter of the move to Maher, made sense and if he could even be 80% for his cost its worth it..so far hes better then we all thought as is LVE etc..

it all depends on dak.
let see how he responds when teams play to contain the rollout like they did in 2017.

I agree, it is almost like beating someone tough is justification enough for the team (coaches/players) to take it easy for a bit....like they "earned" a vacation. Then they go out and stink up another game. Jimmy Johnson is SO right about the country club statement. The team has the talent to beat anyone but they become complacent. It can happen any week.

TWill isn't playing...he's on IR and has likely played his last snap for this team. Hearns...who is Hearns? Yep, our WR corps is practically nonexistent.

until the team and coaching staff learn consistency week to week game to game they are going to stay on this roller coaster

Bad phrasing on my part. I meant that neither guy is contributing, I'm writing up a seperate thread on cutting Hearns.

I also think one thing with Dak is confidence. I often hear players, expecially DB's and WR's play better with swagger, well Dak is the same. If he feels like things are going well, he just does his job and the team does better. When he tries to force things, or has to be "the guy", as is true with many QB's, that's when things go wrong.

I disagree. All good teams will have off games where they play like doggy doo and play way below their level.

But you can't take a really bad NFL team and see them play out of their minds to win a game. I would definitely agree that this was really a 10 point win rather than a 33 point win, but this was a game that most posters thought we would lose - and most thought we would lose badly.

We have three loses this year. Seattle was partly/mostly because two balls bounced from a WRs hands directly to Earl Thomas. The Texans was a hard fought, close loss on the road. The only real abomination was the Panthers game and IMO that was mostly about the fact we held our starters out of the preseason.

So you can excuse the losses with rationalizations but when people say we should probably slow the roll after a win, they aren't being fair.

The team is 3-3. That's the reality. They've looked bad in a few, good in a few, great in one.

That's pretty much the Garrett trademark - inconsistency. Let's see where this team is after Philly. They have Washington, Tennessee and Philly. If what you said is true, then this team should be no worse than 2-1 over that stretch.

I agree
We just need Zeke, the TE’s and a WR or two to step up and fill the void when a team like the Texans take away Cole
I don’t think you need that true one but you need more contributions from the rest

I think his point still stands. One win is worth no more than one loss. Just ch can at the end of the season for proof of that.

I'm both shocked and holy that they put on a performance like they did yesterday, but it only counts as one in the win column. Now we hope that they've discovered who they are and build on this next week. But it's certainly not any home for anyone to say "I told ya so!" About any of the criticisms or concerns they've had for this team.

Let's all just hope that they've turned a corner.

My only push back would be that perfect execution of a crap plan is still crap. The games we have lost have been so horrible from a scheme \ creating favorable matchups standpoint that we were fighting the opponent & our own staff. Further compounded by Dak apparently not knowing or feeling confident enough to let his pre-snap read get him into a better play or at least know where he can\can't go with the ball. Yesterday there was a better plan & better execution & some luck that allowed them to have an easy day. Also didn't hurt that the opponent was as offensively challenged as we have been. I can't read any more into it than that.
