After he won only one Big 12 game during his tenure at Kansas, the Jayhawks have fired head coach Charlie Weis.

He was in the third year of a five-year contract.

Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen will take over as interim head coach, athletic director Sheahon Zenger said.

"I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season," Zenger said in a statement. "But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away."

Might as well fire him now it's not like he was going to make it thru the entire season. Epic fail following another with Turner Gill. From what I heard today it sounds like KU has decided they want their football team to be as successful as their hoops team and will commit some major bucks to bring in a big big name HC.

Here is the kicker about Weis: he is still getting paid from Notre Dame and now Kansas. So next year he could be getting 3 paychecks a week.

Weis probably heads back to the pro game.

He didn't want to do the work the college game requires... recruiting mainly.

If I am Kansas I go hard after a return for Mark Mangino or look at Larry Coker.
Not sure they can steal away any bigger names for that program but the Big 12 has the best coaching in college football and Weis wasn't up to that challenge.

I'm hearing that name mentioned. Many didn't want him to gone a few years ago. He may not be a big enough 'name' HC for them now.

He may not be a "name", but he took that program from obscurity and made them a top 25 team...

I'm shocked no one gave him a head job (Barry Switzer reference)...

Not sure what they can do from a big name stand point.
That team really lacks talent and is basically known as a basketball school.

The best possible hire is probably Bobby Petrino but I'm not sure they can lure him.
After that Mangino and Larry Coker are the best I can think of.

I know they are tired of losing and want to make a bold move. I doubt anything happens until the season is over you know how that always plays out. The new HC Clint Bowen probably won't be the permanent HC unless he wins and no one expects that to happen. There is a running joke around here that a bunch of farm boys (K St.) beats them every year and KU is just passing the time until the hoops season starts. I first heard that in the 80's and you know at some point that is going to hit a nerve.
