Kayvon Thibodeaux - trade up

We have multiple needs in this draft with left guard and wide receiver being prominent. But if Thibodeaux starts to slip outside the top 10 should Dallas trade up for the pass rusher who most had as the top player in this draft.

The scenario I’m thinking is the 11 to 13 range; trading the 1st, 2nd and possibly one of the 5ths. This would definitely leave us scrambling to fill our others needs but would it be worth it? Or should we go into the draft conservatively and understand there is a reason why he is slipping and focus more improving multiple positions in the first two rounds.

He's rumored to actually be sliding because of some concerns about production at UO as well as concerns coming from his interviews.

I am not giving away premium picks to move up to get that guy.

They are punting on 2022. Clearing cap space and creating depth for a run in 2023 when they can also get Zeke off the books and likely welcome a new HC.

Therefore— an aggressive draft strategy to trade up seems unlikely IMO. They are going to want to add a lot of roster depth and hold onto draft capital for next year. If anything, I could see them getting cute and trading down and trying to acquire another 2nd or 3rd round pick.

His slide is the most puzzling thing about this draft season for me, and as far as I can tell it's not grounded in anything. He's still a top 3 player in this class IMO.

According to the draft chart, in order to move up from 24-12 should cost roughly a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd this year.

• Production: Thibodeaux didn't show the quickness and burst expected on his way to seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss -- good numbers, but not those expected of a player deemed a front-runner for the No. 1 pick. Beyond those numbers, scouts and front-office execs with whom I've spoken have praised his talent but consistently questioned his motor. "Lack of fire" is not the type of label prospects want.
  
  
• Interviews: Reporting on prospects' interviews with NFL teams is always tough because I want to be fair to the player, which is why it's important to not report information gleaned from a single source. More than half a dozen scouts have told me that Thibodeaux did not impress in interviews with their teams. The word consistently used to describe his interviews is "poor." Kayvon had more TFLs/game than Hutchinson and Travon Walker and had a really strong pass-rush win rate of 30%. Then you're telling me he was still putting up above-threshold production on a bad ankle, and that's all sounding good.

I don't mind dudes protecting themselves at all. Nick Bosa sat out his entire junior season after a chest injury, went #2, no one cares now. Micah Parsons skipped his junior year to protect himself from injury, no one cares now. No one wants to get Jaylon'ed.

The interview stuff is the only thing I've heard against him, and that whole thing sounds very he-said she-said. I don't know where Kayvon's head is at, but tape wise and measurables wise, he hasn't hurt himself since he last walked off the field this winter. Him, Hutch, and Kyle Hamilton are still the top 3 guys in this class in my book.

Maybe but considering it wasn't just one scout or front office guy saying he was bad in interviews but rather a handful, it seems it's more than just he said, she said.

He's still a top talent but I can see these things making him slide a bit. It's not like he's going to slide into the 20s here though.

I would only trade up for Cross Mississippi St. tackle.

Good luck with this argument…90% of the board think sacks are the only way to measure a pass rusher and everything else is irrelevant.
