#1 - Carolina - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
There's talk about Luck going back for another year. While admirable, it's not the smart move considering he's a lock to go #1 in a year where a rookie scale isn't enacted. His draft stock will never be higher and outside of winning a title and hoisting a Heisman, he has nothing else to prove. Jimmy Clausen has yet to show that he's a franchise QB and his body language is awful (a nod to his rep as being immature). Even if Clausen did have a breakout year, you don’t pass on a QB who’s getting compared to Peyton Manning and can be a cornerstone for a decade.
#2 – Denver – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
The Broncos booted Josh McDaniels out of town and look to be completely overhauling their roster and letting mainstays like Champ Bailey ride off into the sunset. New regimes can often mean new signal callers, but McDaniels pick Tim Tebow showed more poise than anticipated and will be kept aboard. Denver could use help anywhere on defense and CB isn’t out of the question, but Fairley could bump outside in a 3-4 and still be a menace.
#3 – Buffalo – Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
Ryan Fitzpatrick, shockingly, played okay this season. That being said, the Bills are still a mess and could go a hundred different directions. Instead, they focus on securing a pass rusher and Bowers fits the bill. He’s still got upside and his best days still may be ahead of him.
#4 – Cincinnati – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
Besides Luck to Carolina, this is the no brainer pick of the draft. Ocho Cinco and TO are both done in Cinci and outside of emerging Jerome Simpson, an aging Carson Palmer has no one to throw to. Enter Green who is one of the better wideouts to come along in a long time in every conceivable attribute. Green will start from Day 1 and could be a ROY candidate in the right place (just like Cinci).
#5 – Arizona – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
The Cardinals are in a rough spot at QB where John Skelton is currently the signal caller, but only because Matt Leinart, Derek Anderson and Max Hall were so terrible. Though Skelton is by no means bad, he’s also not a franchise QB. Enter Cam Newton, the nation’s most decorated player and a guy who is going to fly up the draft charts come postseason. Some team will take a chance on him early and I’ve got the Cards as that team. While I’m not convinced that Newton will dominate in the pros, he will fare better than Jamarcus Russell and show better accuracy than he’s credited for.
#6 – Cleveland – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
If you’re wondering why Dallas isn’t picking here, you need to be paying more attention. Cleveland seems content with Colt McCoy so no QB here. They spent a high pick on Joe Haden last year who’s done well in the INT department and they won’t go with a top corner here. Instead, they get a weapon for McCoy to throw to in Jones who underachieved slightly and needs some stickum for his hands, but there’s no doubt that he’s got talent and could be to the Browns what Colston is to the Saints.
#7 – San Francisco – Jake Locker, QB, Washington
It’s yet another transitional period for this once storied franchise. With Singletary gone and the franchise’s future up in the air, nothing is set in stone. Alex Smith has shown flashes of being a #1 pick, but flashes are just that and his inconsistency will cost him his job. Troy Smith looked like he could be the guy at times, but that too passed with a whimper. SF doesn’t have a ‘win now’ mentality and will look to a young QB vs. someone like McNabb on the open market. Locker will be able to maintain a presence in the northwest and hopefully be an answer to the once proud days of Joe Montana and Steve Young.
#8 – Tennessee – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
Tennessee has an uncertain future at QB, but a pick here would be a major reach. With Fisher on the hot seat, the franchise still has the pieces to contend with the most electrifying player in the game in Chris Johnson, but they have to upgrade the defense first. Enter Prince Amukamara as the Titans take their pick of the two elite CB’s available. Amukamara possesses a topnotch skillset and can be a shutdown corner to team with Cortland ‘Please stop hitting me, Andre’ Finnegan.
#9 – Dallas – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
Don’t tell me how this happened folks, but Peterson could very well be there this late. Just look at who drafts in front of us: Cleveland, San Francisco, Tennessee. Peterson is being championed as the Megatron of CB’s and is a bit overrated in my book, but there’s no questioning his raw ability. He won’t move to safety; he’ll stay on the outside with Jenkins and relegate an aging Newman to pull nickel duty or FS in a pinch.
#10 – Washington – Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma St.
The Commanders find themselves in a familiar state with no WR corp to speak of that can break a game open. Ask Commander fans about Devin Thomas and his modeling career or the bust factor of that one guy from Oklahoma and you’ll receive a haymaker to the face. Blackmon has been a breakout this season kind of like Thomas was with Michigan State, but give Justin more credit for being more talented without the off the field shenanigans. Rex Grossman will at least have someone to throw to now that actually wears burgundy.
