Keeping our guys

Good point, if Canty wants too much, Tank will probably be cheaper and can play 3-4 DE.

Or NT? Tank at NT; Ratliff at DE?

Doubt we can sign all 4 so that's why Jerry & Stephen must prioritize. We can't lose TO cause our passing attack in serious trouble if he's gone, so he's a definite keep--for maybe 2-3 years.

Canty is a young player whose been our starter almost since he was drafted; last year he was beginning to come on so he's the kind of player at an age we really want to keep, so he's definitely a long-time keep.

Hamlin is best FS we've had since Woody left & he's just turned 27. We've got him for 1 more year with the franchise designation on him. If we can afford him, I'd keep him particularly since he could be moved to SS if Roy injuried/suspended for another horse collar, or Roy's play in 08 season doesn't improve over his 07 season.

Colombo - love to keep him as he's played well for us at RT for the most part. Believe he really wants to stay in Dallas & maybe he's give us a homer's discount BUT cap money is tight and that's why we drafted 2 OTs in 07 & McQuistan in 06. If one of our younger OTs steps up this year, maybe McQuistan (if it true that Marten was moved to OG), then Colombo won't be resigned. He turns 30 & Jerry doesn't want to pay out the big bucks on any more older OL starters.

I think Hamlin and TO will be extended for sure. Possibly even before this regular season begins.

I also think Canty will be extended. I doubt he breaks the bank. He's still very young and improving.

I don't see Colombo being re-signed, however. Not with McQ, Free, and Martin on board. That said, I'd love to be able to keep him, but I don't see it happening unfortunately.

Jerry talked Hamlin into turning down more security in a lukewarm market to sign a 1 year deal with the Cowboys with the hope (or promise) that he could parlay a good season into a bigger contract this offseason. It was a gamble for Hamlin. Hamlin did his part by giving the Cowboys a Pro Bowl season at a discount price, and I can totally understand why he now wants the payday and the security that was supposed to go along with the payoff.

I somewhat feel for Hamlin's situation ... I don't cry myself to sleep at night over it, but I can totally understand why he's frustrated that Jerry slapped him with the tag and now he's once again in the same boat he was last year ... playing on a one year deal with no longterm security.

Hamlin is guaranteed to make top safety money. I don't feel bad for him at all.

we saved 8 mil against next year's cap by restructuring ROmo and Gurode's contracts

we can re-sign some players next year

Since we Colombo gave us the discount for last year and this year when he could have made more money elsewhere and since we really don't know how good Free and Marten are I'm in favor of keeping Colombo...I want a proven guy watching out for Romo and opening holes for Barber. It might not be able to happen but that would be my preference.

Canty is solid but we could do without him if his price is too high but I still hope we can work a deal with Hamlin...last year was the first time I have felt comfortable with our FS since Woody retired.

Owens is a whole different story. If we can keep him with a similar deal to the one he had I'm all for it but if he is too pricey we might not be able to work with him.
