on the chargers, they do a really good job of creating mismatches, so from a linebackers standpoint you really have to study, prepare and be ready because they really will try to spread you out and isolate you as a linebacker or defender

He's the last guy I would worry about. He was awesome against New Jersey except for the Jacobs play and that was just a bad angle more than anything IMO. He at least showed the heart to chase him all the way to the goalline.

It's much more crucial that DeMarcus and Ratliff show up because if they don't get to Rivers we will be in a world of hurt on defense.

It is going to be a rough couple of weeks for James. I hope he is prepared.

You know Payton is going to attack him just like he did three years ago.

Agreed. Rivers moves in teh pocket so well, and he is a big cat to try to sack. D WARE....Please have your best game of the year!

more like AAA+ game. If he can't cover Jacobs, then how can he stay on LT or Sproles.

Yep. James is going to be our biggest liability down the stretch. Love the guy, love his leadership, but hopefully he doesn't get isolated much.

Maybe it is just a feeling but it seems like it takes until the following season before we make certain adjustments. I will never forget the year that FB's killed us receiving out of the backfield. Hope James brings his "A" game and is ready to go. Really the whole team and the coaches will have to bring their "A" game the rest of the season. We can't afford multiple breakdowns like we did last week.

As I have been told multiple times by multiple posters this week, not many LB's run a 4.5 like Jacobs can. Spencer being blocked by James didn't help either.

It is all about preparation. That's where good coaches become great.

I think Phillips is a very good defensive coach, but it has been a while since I watched one of his games and told myself that was a masterful defensive scheme he rolled out there for that specific game. Overall, he's normally very good and aggressive. Very sound and consistent. But we'll need a few genius level games from him the next two weeks. We can't afford the big play breakdowns and I think that happens because he gets comfortable. We've been extremely comfortable with James. I hope we aren't for these upcoming games. It can't be taken for granted he's going to get the job done. Good coaches like Turner and Payton are going to go after him heavy and hard. I would send Shockey, Gates, Sproles and Bush at him all day long, not to mention the fullbacks. San Diego has two pretty good ones in Tolbert and Hester.

They'd better watch Barb Carpenter too. We got caught with him isolated on a WR a couple of times against the Giants.

The coaches better figure out that problem quickly. I don't think he is as horrible as some here do (drafted too high, yes). He has some ability in a limited role giving Brooking a breather. SD and NO will try to take advantage for sure. I have a lot of respect for Sproles, but we have been more than adequate against "speed backs" this year. Scoring early and often combined with a strong pass rush is the key. Duh, not like it isn't every week, but the better the team the more important it becomes. This ain't the Chiefs we are playing this week.

For this game (and maybe against the Saints) make the Bear 46 (or the Bum, as Wade calls it) the base D and put James in a position where he is not a liability. James got a ton of sacks from that front. And keep Brooking in as the nickel LB.

I'm suprised we haven't seen that defense all year cause we played the best last year when in the 46.

I have been waiting for Wade to go to it too. Thought for sure he would pull it out during the first 4 game sack dry spell. Perhaps teams figured it out during the end of the 2008 year_causing the humiliating losses? If so, just tweak the dang thing and get it out there Wade.
