I've been wondering about this myself, but the DFW media doesn't seem to think we care abou this news and never report on it.

If he chooses not to sign by July 15th then we can't negotiate a long term deal. If he signs, we can still talk a long term deal.

Just to make sure my thinking cap is on correctly...if he does not sign by the 15th, then he plays for the tag this season...correct?

Then we have to wait til after the season to talk about a long term contract, right?

My guess is there is nothing (public) to report.

Frankly it doesn't make sense for Hamlin not to sign the franchise offer. Whether he signs or not, he still will get only $4.35?+ in 08. Latest I heard 2-3 weeks ago, there pretty good width between what he wants & we want to pay. So who knows. BTW: Does anybody know if he can/will participate in TC if he doesn't sign the franchise offer?

I read in one of the articles that talks have picked up, but that's about it.

Maybe the media types will report on this as we get closer to camp.

Before we head toward vacation we asked Jerry Jones to update us on a few topics.

What's the deal with Ken Hamlin? You trying to lock him up? "Those are ongoing. Our talks with him are ongoing."

Cowboys franchised Hamlin and he has until mid-July to sign the contract. Dallas wants Hamlin long-term.

Do you want to take care of Chris Canty long-term, you signed him to a tender offer? "To some degree that's an ongoing thing. We recognized when we signed that [tender] we got a lot more that we want to do there we'll continue on that."

A few weeks ago you said you would be open to getting a backup QB. You still trying to do that? "All the confidence. A lot of confidence in Brad. Had real good camps and real good work."

I think it's because Jessica Simpson isn't involved. Just a guess though.

I would imagine he saw the cash that several other, far less talented, safeties got this offseason and he's looking to cash in for something similar and Jerry just isn't willing to give in and let him have that kind of money.

I've got a feeling he'll play for the tag this year, and we'll see a lot more of Watkins in the lineup, and if he shows that he has anything at all that we might see Hamlin walk after this year.

If he signs by the 15th, we can neg. during the year but if he signs after the 15th and we neg. a new deal, i think (??) we lose the franchise tag for the length of the contract.

Thanks WG, we should do Canty first because Hamlin's price is probably through the roof thanks to old Al D.

Pretty sure he has to sign a contract of some sort (tag or new deal) to participate in camp. I know in the off season programs they didn't have to, example: Canty was around all off season and finally signed his tender.

Rick Kite, Fairfax, Va.: What is the latest on the contract negotiations with Ken Hamlin? As I recall July 15 is an important day to reach a contract/extension for players with the franchise tag.

Mickey: You are right, that's the deadline for players with franchise tags to sign long-term contracts. After that, they must play for the franchise tender, which in Hamlin's case is one year, $4.396 million. If you sign a franchise player to a long-term deal after that date, you lose the franchise designation for the length of the contract. I'm told things began budging some this week, and both sides seem to be zeroing in on the deal Gibril Wilson signed with the Raiders, which I thought was a tad much at that time, six years, $39 million, with nearly $20 million paid out over the first three years.

Screw hamlin wanting al davis money.

He wasn't good enough to warrant a huge deal, sign the franchise tender and shut the hell up.
Marginal cornerbacks could do what he did last year. Great he doesn't have a cornerbacks ego, oh wait apparently he does, sign a contract elsewhere you merc. Jerry gave you a chance and you pull this garbage? Free safety isn't a skill position, screw hamlin he can walk stupid big-eared punk, hope you get injured(unless you sign with us then GO HAMLIN)
