Kenny Vaccaro is slipping

About month ago I thought Dallas would need to trade up for him. Now I think he will be available at 18. Not everyone is on board with Vaccaro as his coverage skills need refining but he causes destruction in running game and is excellent blitzer. I also look more at his intangibles - when you watch him on film he never takes play off. Some of other safeties on board might offer little more upside pop but Vaccaro is about production and leadership. You pair him with Carr (who I also consider tough guy) and Claiborne (who I think is learning to be tough) and you could have the making of thuggish DB field Dallas is sorely missing. Darren Woodson often refers to lack of alpha male back there as a major problem. This selection would fix that in a hurry.

Only way i'd be really interested was if he slipped into the 2nd round i just don't think he's that much better then a lot of other safeties this year expected to go in the 2nd and 3rd. Certainly wouldn't want to spend #18 on him

Well he's incredibly athletic and can cover ground well so I wouldn't rule him out. A free ranging S is something Kiffin needs in his defense. If I were to defend this pick (which I'm not certain I'd like) I would say that a safety 20 yards off the line of scrimmage does not need the coverage skill of a CB as much of those long routes don't have a lot of moves. There are deep posts etc which require coverage ability and I've seen safeties turned around that deep. So he does need to cover some just not as much and not generally around the LOS.

I'm also wondering if we don't have a true separation of labor between our safeties this year. Not 100% but by and large different responsibilities; not completely interchangeable.

I would think that it depends on who else is there at #18...I feel he is the best Safety in the draft but so much so than the next few guys to take at #18 (i.e.: there will be safeties later). If we ever traded down in the first and picked up an extra 2nd or 3rd, then I would want Vacarro at that point if he were still around since we would have those extra picks to grab an OL (Terron Armstead) or DL.

If you going to draft a Safety first round he should be a turn over creator. So far he isnt. Give me a lineman either side.

That's my concern with him. I don't see the playmaker in him like others do. If one of those guards are there, draft one of them.

At this point, players really don't slip, it's more about organizations ranking their needs, positional value and adjusting accordingly.

It's like of our situation with Warmack and Cooper. Two OG's going in the top 17 is extremely unlikely. Plausible, but unlikely.

The best thing for us is this draft is deep in nearly all of our red-alert positions (OL, DL, S)

This wouldn't bother me as long as we don't pass on a true difference maker. There is some risk in not taking a Cooper or Warmack and then say getting a Pugh or Jones later. There's no guarantees a highly rated player will turn out better than a second day or later player though. My only concern is with this OL we at the very least need good competition all along the OL. Missing a potential long term starter with our first pick is really not an option for this team. Depends on whose is there at our pick.

If they can drop down a few and pick up a third or fourth while still getting someone they project to be in the same tier then go for it. I'm just not sure dropping too far will keep them on the same level of play.

totally agree with this. I prefer a ballhawk. We pay Ware and Spencer $10+ mill per year to blitz, which is not why we pay a S. We pay a S to cover and make INTs. On those, Vaccarro is about par with about 5-6 other Ss in this draft. OL, or in a worst case scenario DL, is the only way we should go in the first. There's only one non-OL/DL player in the first I would even consider and that's Austin because I think he's a potential gamechanger-type player.

I always find it funny when a player is said to be "slipping" in the draft. What it really means is that the media draft analysts initially overrated the player. I doubt that Vacarro's rating by NFL scouts has changed much.

Yep. Media once thought he was a top 10 pick. I think he will be a riser come draft day like Mark Barron because teams need safeties.

Barron > Vaccaro

while he may go prior to 18, he's not gonna go top 7 like Barron did.

Barron is a ss. Vaccaro is more of a fs. Just pointing that out.

I hope he's the pick at 18, wouldn't be surprised if we move up too get him ala Claiborne last year, he has pictures with Jerry and seems like Dallas really likes him.

I would be surprised too. If we do for anyone, I'd think it'd be just a couple/three spots for Cooper or Richardson.

Doubt we do at all though.
