DallasCowboys.com reports Dallas Cowboys LB Greg Ellis (Achilles') is closed to returning to practice, possibly as early as next week.

I guess this can put the retirement rumors to rest for good. If he practices next week and plays in just the last preseason game, he'll be good to go for Week 1..

I am not sure Ellis' problems are physical at this point. If he is not mentally able to trust his legs, he can't play.

Well first of all Greg said that he doesn't want to retire. Also, since the Achilles injury is usually a 12 month rehabilitation process, if Ellis can make it on the field by 11 months and play at the level he was playing at, I think most Cowboy fans will be thrilled

Spencer could start but like Ware, but he won't be near as effective as he will be later. Hopefully Ellis can come back and reclaim his starting job. If not we go with Spencer and expect a few rookie mistakes.

Yes, thrilled, because he is a decent guy.
But thrilled because he's playing out the string instead of passing the mantle on to Spencer and delaying the rookie's chance in the sun?

That is a very real possibility if not probability. The season opener is three weeks from Sunday. We won't have to wait long to find out.

The team isn't gonna force the issue with him because he's their best OLB across form Ware.

The difference is that Spencer is our future. Ellis is just playing out the string before he fades into the sunset.

I say start Spencer early and let him be fully in the swing of things when the second half of the season begins.

And if anybody has sustained the same injury that Ellis has (I have), you cannot tell me that you were 100 percent one year later. This is the silliest post I have seen in a long, long time.

Why would someone retire and give up salary including be liable to pay back signing cap bonus money when they could be cut, earn an injury settlement and keep their bonus as well as become a free agent for next season?

He is not eligable for the PUP list since he played in the first practice even if it was only for 10 minutes. So yes, it is too late to put him on the PUP list.
