you mean like players in the NBA like Luka can hit 30ft 3s under pressure all net and can barely hit a free throw unguarded? he hit how many Xps in the RS before he struggles like nearly all of them?? people are overreacting to one bad game or small stretch.
Not even a bad stretch but I felt so bad for him. It rattled him. I remember when ice man went in a slump. But didn’t he have hip surgery. Maher just got into his own head.

first off Maher was 90% last year only kicks missed were over 55.. only had an XP issue the very last game Maher was the right choice last year as hes been like 90% kicker 2 years in row. had one bad game really against TB and it didn't cost us and had nothing to do with FGs was an XP deal.. he should get shot to compete with whomever else..no ones guaranteed anything...

you make this argument when the other kicker mentioned not even signed with his own team. jeez the haters in here who say clueless stuff.

Money maher for 16 games, one shaky game and hes trash,.or more like a fan issue. they will have more than one kicker in for competition when that starts like what OTAs are months away? game 1 6months away but complaints started we haven't addressed the kicker yet.,LOL SMFH!!
He started to go off the rails in the last game of the season, missing his final kick (an extra point) against Washington before he was terrible against Tampa and would have missed against San Fran if his kick had not been blocked. The problem with kickers is they can get in their own head and not be able to find their way out. Now, I don't know if that's the case with Maher, but I'd prefer Pineiro because he has been more steady the last two years. His first season was more like Maher's career average, but after that he has hardly missed.

Maybe there's a good reason Pineiro is unsigned (but so are Maher, Gould, etc.), but at least his team last year already has a kicker coming back from injury as a reason for that.

Do they have to report every thought in their head to you? They also have come out and explicity said those players will be starters once the season kicks off.
It was a joke. I thought it was ridiculous enough that that would be clear, but I guess not.

1 bad game

he deserves shot to compete for it that how you bring him back 16 great money maher games add in saints the year before and one bad one. BTW he made his last xp and FG.. thats why, we letting players go after having one bad game now ..hero to trash, Right that cowboys zone fan for you., cant trust guy who proved it over 16 games but one bad game and hes out.. talk about entitlement, that what fans think they are entitled to judge players after a single bad game.
The last couple of kicks give me a little bit of hope that he can straighten it out if we bring him back. I don't know if the last three games being on grass affected him, if the enforcement of the marker rule did or if he just got the yips. But I also don't know if he can find his way back from the yips since kickers can be rather fragile.

Pineiro had a better season, though, and he made two 50-plus kicks, so it isn't like he just hit chip shots. He finished the season making his last 19 field goals and last 14 extra points.

Jerry Jones is the one who said we'd be looking for a new kicker this year, and if we're going to look, this is the direction I believe we should go. I'm not against bringing Maher back to see if he can get it straightened out, but I'd rather go with Pineiro if we're signing just one. We already have Vizcaino for competition purposes.

Yes, but the indication seemed to be that he wasn't interested in bringing Maher back, not that he wanted to bring in competition.

The tweet from Clarence Hill said, "Jerry said the Cowboys are starting over at kicker."

I've read a lot of crazy posts around here lately. It's hard to pick out the jokes anymore.
True. I guess I should have noted that it was sarcasm or put an emoji with it ... but I admit that it's more fun to throw something like that out there and see what happens (as far as commenting on an equally crazy but seemingly serious post).

Let me clarify that: jazzcat's post that I responded to wasn't the crazy one. It was the one that jazzcat was responding to about players being entitled. I just threw a little nonsense fuel on the fire.

I'm generally curios by what metric you think he had one of the best seasons in the NFL?

Last season he was tied for #9 in FG% taking XP out of the equation. #7 for touchback % on kickoffs.

I mean, not bad but not anywhere near the best.

https://www.nfl.com/stats/player-stats/category/field-goals/2022/REG/all/kickingfgpct/DESC
  • 3rd in total points
  • 90% on FGs
    • Just one of his misses was under 50 yards
  • 9 of 11 from 50+ yards (Tied for 4th most)
  • 50 of 53 on XPs
  • Tied for 3rd with a long of 60 yards

No one metric will show the guy as the best in the league, but pretty much every metric you look at he's right there towards the top. I wont go out of my way to argue he was the best, but his season is right up there with the Justin Tuckers and other best kickers. Of course considering regular season only.

I think if his season had ended with the regular season, everyone would want him back. It's the postseason performance that makes him a question mark.

Panthers re-signed Pineiro after all. Based on what's out there, it seems like we might as well just re-sign Maher and hope his playoff yips are not recurring. Still hoping for some late-round draft competition. Maybe Maryland's Chad Ryland (although I'm unsure how early he'll go). The site the following profile came from lists him as a fifth-rounder. UTEP's Gavin Bachle also is a fifth-round possibility.

Chad Ryland has one of the smoothest kicking motions you’ll find, with excellent control on his kicks, good leg strength, and fairly trustworthy kickoff abilities. The Eastern Michigan transfer was 5 year starter in college, and made over 80% of his field goals in each of his final 3 seasons. Unlike some other kickers, Ryland was fully trusted on deep kicks. His 19-of-23 field goal rate is solid, but it looks much better when you notice that only 2 of those attempts were from inside of 30 yards. Ryland has always had a big leg, and showed it at Kohl’s Kicking Camps recently with a make from as deep as 66 yards away. His improved accuracy in recent years has turned him into a legitimate NFL prospect.

2022 Stats

39/40 extra points, 19/23 field goals, 2/2 inside 30 yards, 7/7 from 30-39 yards, 7/8 from 40-49 yards, 3/6 from 50+ yards, long of 53, 70% touchback rate

Gavin Baechle is a major sleeper at the placekicker position. The 5 year starter is one of the best kickoff specialists in the nation, and was among the best in college football as a placekicker this year, making 22 of his 24 field goal attempts. He was 9-of-11 from 40+, including a long of 54 yards. Baechle has shown poise in key scenarios, and has clean mechanics that result in plenty of elevation and control of his kicks. Baechle led the Conference USA in just about every category this year en route to winning the conference’s Special Teams Player of the Year award, and his balanced style should bode well to the NFL.

2022 Stats

31/31 extra points, 22/24 field goals, 9/9 inside 30 yards, 4/4 from 30-39 yards, 7/8 from 40-49 yards, 2/3 from 50+ yards, long of 54, 63% touchback rate

Christopher Dunn also posted some good numbers after a couple of shaky years.

https://***USER-BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1***/college/NCState_logo.gif Christopher Dunn, K, N.C. State
Height: 5-10. Weight: 190.
Projected Round (2023): 5-7.

View Ranking History

2/25/23: Dunn had an excellent senior year, connecting on 97 percent of his field goals - 28-of-29 -, with the longest going for 53 yards. Dunn hit both attempts above 50 yards and was 8-of-9 in the 40-yard range. He showed good accuracy in 2018 - 89 percent - and 2019 - 88 percent - before down years in 2020 - 71 percent - and 2021 - 68 percent.

Pineiro just resigned for two years with Carolina. Anyone on the free agent market other than Gould or Maher worth looking into?

not sure why more kickers don't cut half their kicking foot off and put a steel plate in the front like Tom Demsey. sheesh, good job Tom.

They are CRAZY not to give Maher a shot. This is NO different than golf where a player picks up a flaw causing something to go wrong.....it's in your head until you figure it out....usually turns out to be something minor. Lets not over blow this until we give him a shot in camp.

You do realize that his lifetime FGP was 61.6%, right? The guy was actually terrible....as were most kickers back in the day. Still can't believe that Jan Stenerud is in the HOF at 66.8%
