The ball spinning to move the laces away is NOT an excuse...that does not affect the kick whatsoever.
However, IF the ball is not placed exactly where the kicker is expecting it, that is HUGE...the kicker doesn't wait for the ball to go down...he moves with the snap...his plant foot is put exactly where he measured and paced...it's like a golf swing.
Imagine you line up to the golf ball, and in the middle of your swing the ball moves backward or forward or sideways a mere half inch...you are totally screwed.
The football is bigger, but if the spot is an inch or two forward or backward, your swing leg will have your foot making contact higher or lower on the football for less distance and height or lower trajectory. If the spot is an inch or two inches left or right, you're going to catch the ball in the wrong spot and it's going way right or way left.
This happens all the time; sometimes it's the fault of the kicker who doesn't duplicate his steps, plant foot, and leg swing exactly the way he's supposed to do so when in rhythm; sometimes it's because the ball was placed just a little off the mark, but it's way too late for the kicker to change his plant foot or natural leg swing; sometimes the bad snap just throws off the timing and the kicker is early or late or simply off because he's trying to adjust his swing on the fly....it's bad either way.
No way McBriar is going to fall on the sword...he's not paid enough to do that for a kicker who's out of whack....It's probably his fault or Faulk would be struggling with practice kicks as well. Again, I think maybe we should do away with the ball holder thing on the sideline when kicking into the net and make the punter go over there and practice holding the ball out in front of him and placing it down as Folk approaches the net to simulate the real thing a little better. Can't help but establish a little more confidence in the holder as well.
