Does anyone remember a game from a long time ago, probably in the 70s, when there was a safety on a kickoff during a Cowboys game? The player fielded the kickoff on about the 4 and then retreated into the endzone and knelt down, thinking it would be a touchback when in reality it was a safety. It was so long ago and I was so young I can’t remember whether it was the Cowboys player or the other team’s player who did this royal screwup.

Yes. They handled the ball - dropped it then when it bounced into end zone covered it.

That is why the rule change to having control of ball.

Like the old muffed punt rule...no control, so no fumble...so they call it a muff...and could not be advanced for a TD or any additional yards. It was the kicking teams ball at the spot of the recovery.

1988 season, home game against the Giants I think. Like the 2nd or 3rd game of the season If I remember correctly.

Darryl Clack was tackled in the end zone on a kickoff in that game.

for some reason this reminded me of when we played the Falcons in 92 or 93 in Atlanta, and Deion fielded the return, pretended like he was taking a knee, but didn't fully take the knee, and was able to break off a sizeable return b/c our special teams had switched off thinking he had taken the knee? at least, that's what my memory is telling me, hahah...
