I know BP is a fanatic about roster spots and it would hurt somewhere else but Vandy kicks very short. The opposing teams start at our 35-40 more often than not. Shouldn't we use a spot reserved for another special teams player to carry a kicker that can kick it deep? Is there anyone on the kick off coverage that can over compensate for his kicks and keep it to the 20?

I think having opposing teams starting past the 30 yard line each time is a big problem. Indy will kill us if we do this with them. Can you imagine Manning starting at the 35 yard line each time...especially with our bend, don't break D?

How come college kickers seem to kick farther then the pro's? Does the tee help that dang much?

Yes, higher tees do make a difference. The NCAA changed the rule to lower the tee heigth to 1" just like the pros this past off season. In college they kick off from the 35 not the 30.

You have to consider that the main job of the kicker is to put it through the uprights. There are many guys in college that can boom their kickoffs, but ask them to make a FG and they struggle. These guys get weeded out for the more accurate FG kickers who may have the slightly weaker legs.

When was the last time our ST made a play period? How about a touch down run back from a kick returner or a punt returner? How about a blocked punt. McBriar can boom the heck out of a kick, but right now, when we're at the 40, we need to push teams back within their 5 or 10 and we can't seem to do that.

HOw about a touch back kickoff? BP told us that he had to have a great special teams this year and so far, I'm still looking for it.

At Carolina, the ST forced a fumble on the kickoff.

Good point. Yesterday Vandy was very bad kicking off.

I've never agreed with Parcells ridiculous point about one ST player critically messing up a gameday roster. (Of course I've never agreed with his stubborn, mule-headed view of the 2 point chart...so what's new?)

Indy seemed to have been able to make it work the last 3 or 4 years with Vandy as their kicker. I don't think that one extra kicker is what lost those playoff games for them against NE and Pittsburgh.

I'd bring back Cortez just for kick-offs.

Anyone know who we carry on the active roster for special teams only? That would be an interesting analysis. Maybe Adam or someone else has a good handle on the active roster? There has to be one guy that we can swap out a Cortez for?

No. Don't do that. If you want a kick off specialist, then find someone else. Cortez is a chump and not worthy of being a Cowboy. Plus he isn't even that great at kickoffs himself. Being better than Vandy is not saying much.

I don't care who. Find a soccer player with a strong leg. Have TrickBlue or Hostile do it, whoever can kick it in the endzone each time :D

Do some research, Dude. Before yesterday we were #2 in the NFL in opponents starting field position.

I think part of it is the shape of the ball too. The NFL ball is narrower and longer while the college ball is fatter I believe. Its why you see kickers pushing the ends in before kickoffs, to get that shape.

It's hard to pin anyone back if we are making pentlties forcing the kickoff to start further back. Doesn't matter who is kicking off.

He cannot afford a roster spot. His bust and #1 pick (#54) needs to run down the field a few times a game and maybe record a tackle.

That's defintely worth giving up 10 yards every time we score (sarcasm in post).

What? OUR 35 or 40? Did you mean THEIR 35 or 40? Even then, it's not even close.

We've had 44 kickoffs. Only six of them have been returned to the 35 or farther. Twenty-six of them haven't made it past the 26.

Please don't use logic in this type of arguement.

If we could get Suisham back it would make a big difference in field position-- especially now that we are missing Thompson on the other side.

Washington has a good return team, but I do think Vandy's kickoffs are suspect. Suisham on a bad day is still inside the 10 yard line.
