Kiffin primarily runs a 4-3 "under" front. It appears very similar one of the primary fronts that the Cowboys used this season

The 4-3 under front is here:

Here is a screen shot of the Cowboys this season:

If you changed the position names in the Cowboys screenshot:

Ware = Weak Side DE
Hatcher = Weak Side DT (Under Tackle)
Lissemore = Strong Side DT
Spears = Strong Side DE
Spencer = Strong Side LB
Connor = MLB
Sims = WLB

Here is what the Tampa 2 basic responsibilities are:

Good stuff. I think you can add 27 Frampton and 43 Sensabaugh to the list.

Why do the players look like cupcakes? Wade never ran this.

Let me clarify that when I said similar, I was only referring to the fronts and Kiffin's 4-3 Under.

Kiffin runs the 4-3 Under with and without the Tampa-2 coverage schemes.

The key to the 4-3 Under is getting 1-on-1 blocking for the Weak Side DT (under tackle). In Tampa Bay Warren Sapp was the under-tackle. On the Cowboys, Hatcher's role has been almost identical to an under-tackle when the Cowboys were in the front shown in the screenshot.

.

great post.

Can you discuss the SSLB role a bit? Do you think Spencer is a good fit there?

Hatcher is a nice player especially as a rusher but he is not Atkins, Suh, McCoy, Melton, Williams or any of the 3 technique elite guys that really make a 4-3 nasty.

The difference is pretty small yet the main crux of the issue.

Spencer and Ware are both standing up and can move around. They can both blitz or either can drop into coverage or they both could.

In the 4-3 under you have far more certainty with the 4 down linemen coming.

Dallas has Hatcher signed for all of one more year.

I think one of the reason to go back to the 4-3 is to let Spencer walk and avoid paying him. That would be Jerry logic at work but we'll see. I think Spencer could play the LDE role fine in this scheme. Ellis did and they are similar size.

I'll put together a more complete analysis on that later. My initial thought is that Spencer's ideal position is SOLB in a 3-4 defense. I'm not certain that he is an ideal fit in Kiffin's defense at either SLB or SDE.

With Spencer being a Free Agent, I don't know if he will have the same value to the Cowboys that he would have had if Rob Ryan stayed.

I do think that Kiffin's defense will be perfect for DeMarcus Ware. He will continue to line up wide of the OT (wider than in some other 4-3 defenses). The biggest difference is that he will NOT be dropping into coverage unless it's a rare zone blitz.
