Yes we have injuries on defense, but Kiffin's scheme is the real culprit. The Bears were missing guys too yet they managed to bend not break. Remember the job Rob Ryan did under similar circumstances last year? Yeah it eventually broke but it wasn't this bad. Thanks Lacewell, Thanks Jerry.

Bears got pressure with 4 we didn't. What does scheme have to do with that?

Monte Kiffin/ Maranelli 's schemes are fine. This kind of Epic awfulness on defense that is about to set records for bad play rests solely at the feet of the guy that hires the players. The General Manager.

Please don't use the words Kiffin and Defense together. It is a criminal act punishable up to life in prison.

JG has been here since what...07?

They haven't been able to handle A-gap blitzes the entire time he's been here. That kind of ineptitude is unbelievable.

We should move Carter to the Mike and Lee to SLB and Church to WLB. I would blitz that "A" gap with Carter and let Lee play coverage. Our DT's are quick off the snap, but don't have the strength to push the interior line and force QB's outside of it. They don't necessarily need to break blocks and get to the backfield, they need to push these lineman back so the QB is forced to move. Instead the QB's first move is one step into the pocket and a clear throw to an open receiver.

The scheme itself is fine. It never ceases to amaze me how people go with the media narrative that Kiffin is old, so his scheme must be 'outdated.' I see the same scheme run by various teams every Sunday. Saw the Seahawks show a 1 deep safety look and change into....Cover 2.

The problem that I have is exactly what Gruden said. Cover 2 works if you have personnel and can get pressure on the QB. The zone coverage can cover enough ground and putt he LB's and DB's in place to make interceptions. The problem is that we can't get any pressure in part due to the injuries on the D-Line. The other problem is that Scandrick and Webb are the only corners that fit into the scheme. Carr is making the best and well, we need to look to trade Mo Claiborne anyway. And the safety play is horrendous outside of Wilcox, who rarely plays now because of injury.

My issue is that Kiffin keeps going back to Cover 2 shells when the D-Line can't get pressure. I've felt this way since the Zimmer era. Zimmer insisted that the D-Line play for the run first and second, then go after the QB. And he played from a Cover 2 scheme. It wasn't until he started working with Marvin Lewis and Lewis made the D-Line go after the QB instead of worrying about the run that Zimmer's defenses became pretty good. I remember Wade saying the same thing when he got here...you can't go Cover 2 anymore unless you get pressure on the QB. In Wade's case, he said he usually brings 1 extra rusher if he wants to go Cover 2.

Ok if you dont have the personnel to run this scheme then its the god darn wrong scheme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sorry but the dude is freaking 75 years old. your telling me they could not find someone that was under the age of 65 to come in and run this D? Yea the dude is freaking old. The move to a 4-3 was a disaster and one of the worse moves JJ has ever made.

The players suck. No scheme needed. No scheme is needed when you have 4 defenders around ONE player and nobody gets near him, in the Endzone, and they are looking at each other with their thumbs up their BLEEP.....

This defense is and HAS been a facade for years.. It's finally showing up for all to see. Rob Ryan was the full scapegoat and the wrong coach to be fired last season. I think old red has some kind of dirt on the Jones' Family. It's the only thing I can think of as to why this guy still has a job.. It's the Front Offices fault for hiring an 70 year old or so DC who couldn't hack it at the college level, let alone the NFL level nowadays..

The pass rush was completely horrible last night. Unreal.. I think a pee wee league team could've beat the Cowboys last night. Leave it to Dallas to make a QB like McKown or whatever his name is look like an All Star.. Every bounce went the Bears way. Unbelievable. Hats off to the Bears. They do what other teams do when they are supposed to . Win...

While the Cowboys, once again, wilt away another season.

If this ain't an eye opener for Ol' Skeletor. Nothing is.

Well put. You can put all of this fiasco at the feet of our illustrious GM Jerry Jones. You see, people need to understand that this is at the very core of what is ailing this team- a REAL GM with a plan and moves that back up the plan.
Jerry made a move to fire Rob Ryan last year, just for the sake of firing someone. What was the plan? Switch schemes to a 4-3? Ok- where is the personnel to back up this change? You see, Jerry, ever the oil prospector- laid ALL his eggs in the Jay Ratliff/Anthony Spencer basket- and then, to back that up- decided he didnt need to draft any defensive lineman. He gambled, and lost.
It makes the Escobar pick in the second round look that much more stupid. This team didnt need a developmental tight end, it needed defensive lineman, and alot of them. But that is the Jerry way- I call it the Jerry-Go-Round.
Now- all of the past drafts (see 2009) are coming back to haunt this team in the worst way. Combine that with the untterly stupid contracts (see Jay Ratliff) that he has given out and the firing of Rob Ryan just to make a move and you have a recipe for disaster (see last nights Saints game part 2)

The sad part is there are no quick fixes to this defense.

We have a bunch of guys off the street who wouldn't suit up in preseason let alone this late in the season. The problem with the defense in the players lining up along the defensive line. The area of strength as our brilliant GM referred to back in training camp. And don't give all this hogwash about injuries to Spencer & Crawford. Those two wouldn't be able to stop the run yesterday either. We need beef in the middle and the last time we've invested anything higher than a 4th rounder at DT was Hatcher in 2006. Ignoring the interior defensive line is costing us being the worst defense in the league.

When we hired Kiffin, this was our projected D-Line for the year:

LDE: Anthony Spencer (double digit sacks player that played on a Pro-Bowl level in 2012)
DT: Jay Ratliff
DT: Jason Hatcher
RDE: DeMarcus Ware

Our backups were:

Ben Bass
Tyrone Crawford
Kyle Wilber
Nick Hayden

It's also reasonable to assume that they would have picked up a George Selvie type during training camp and see what he could do. Generally in 4-3 schemes you can get a few backups that are not good starters, but with a reduced role they can be effective on passing downs rushing the passer. The big point of contention when Kiffin got here was mediots stating that we needed a big DT for the 1-tech when Kiffin's scheme doesn't use a big DT for the 1-tech (i.e. Booger McFarland was a former 1-tech for Kiffin).

Now that has been shattered due to all of the D-Line injuries. I still have a gripe against Kiffin using the Cover 2 when the pass rush doesn't get there, but he's not always using Cover 2 on every down. Not even close.

I honestly think we can start to solve our problems on defense simply by not valuing 'cover corners' and instead valuing good safety play and big corners that can tackle.

Safeties go for a cheaper price than cover corners. Big corners that can tackle go for a cheaper price than a cover corner. But, it fits today's NFL passing schemes. In today's NFL, WR's are going to catch the ball. The passes are shorter and teams throw more. It's being able to prevent the YAC that's key. And when you have a cover corner that doesn't have big shoulders and doesn't like tackling, they get hurt (i.e. Claiborne).

This ain't 1992 anymore and none of these corners are as good as Deion was.
