Mel do you see the Patriots drafting a CB since both of their starting ones have left?
Mel Kiper
(2:04 PM)
When you look at it now, losing Revis is huge. When they won a Super Bowl in the early 2000's it was with Ty Law as the elite corner. Now you lost Revis. It's a big factor. You have to be concerned if you're a fan of the Patriots. They did bring McCourty back, but losing Revis is huge. They've had successful teams, but their Super Bowl winning teams have had that elite player in the secondary.

What do you think of what Philly has done this offseason?
Mel Kiper
(2:05 PM)
It's been a mixed bag. The Bradford for Foles trade is a gamble. Bradford has ability, but he has had three serious injuries since his Oklahoma days. You've given up some key weapons over the last couple of years. But you bring in some guys. If you bring in Murray, you've, reportedly, still have Ryan Mathews. Jordan Matthews, you hope he can continue to be productive. I like bringing in Kiko Alonso, but he has the same injury concerns.
-
Donald (Indiana)
afternoon Mel, will any free agent signings or defections have a major impact on a teams draft plans?
Mel Kiper
(2:07 PM)
It creates needs that you didn't have and it fills needs maybe you had. There are a couple of teams in the first round -- Arizona lost a OG but they added one. They lost a couple of DTs, but they added a couple.
Mel Kiper
(2:08 PM)
I find it interesting that Andre Johnson goes to Indy. That's the Texans' worst nightmare -- losing Johnson to Andrew Luck in the same division. That's a big hit.
Mel Kiper
(2:08 PM)
San Francisco has to be careful. They lost some good players. Frank Gore. Mike Iupati. Patrick Willis. Now, you have to hope Carlos Hyde can stay healthy and be your workhorse back.
-
Andre (NC)
Which prospects have the most to lose/gain from their pro days?
Mel Kiper
(2:10 PM)
Tevin Coleman has a lot to gain from his Indiana pro day. Paul Dawson. Chris Hackett. It's important they do well at the TCU pro day. Shane Ray. Denzel Perryman.
Mel Kiper
(2:11 PM)
Byron Jones, UConn. He had a great combine, but when he runs, he could add to his rising star.
-
Pete (mobile) [via mobile]
If murray goes to Philly do u see Gurley being there for dallas at 27?
Mel Kiper
(2:12 PM)
They have some other needs on the DL that they could look to fill. The problem with Gurley is he going to have to redshirt this year? He's coming in with that injury. He would be in the discussion.
-
Tommy (New Hampshire)
If the Pats plan to go away from the bump and run coverage and change schemes without Revis and Browner, what corners do you see as fits for them?
Mel Kiper
(2:13 PM)
Logan Ryan is a guy they drafted and we'll see how he emerges. Kevin Johnson would be a good guy in that scheme. He projects to be a potential late first round pick.
-
Bert (St. Paul, MN)
While there is a size difference, are there a number of similarities between Brett Hundley and Logan Thomas?
Mel Kiper
(2:14 PM)
Hundley is a more accomplished passer and a better all around QB. Thomas really struggled after showing great potential early in his career. Hundley is a long time starter. Big hands. Smart kid. He just has to work on being more precise. Feeling the pressure in the pocket better. From a physical and athletic prospect, he'd be a good 2-3 round pick for a team like KC.
-
Darren nc [via mobile]
What round do u see Alvin Dupree going in?
Mel Kiper
(2:15 PM)
He tests like a first and he played, at times, like a third. I would say probably second round, maybe, maybe late first. Teams like Arizona, Baltimore, Dallas might be interested in the first, but probably a second round pick.
-
Juan (Houston)
Other than QB is there a player in this draft that can become a top 5 at their position?
Mel Kiper
(2:17 PM)
You would think one of the RBs. I would say Gurley definitely before the injury. Melvin Gordon III could. Ameer Abdullah could. I think Amari Cooper could come in and have a real good year. Maxx Williams, at TE, could. Brandon Scherff could be like Zack Martin and be a Pro Bowl caliber OG or RT. Cameron Erving.
-
Andre (NC)
which TE prospects do you see starting from day 1?
Mel Kiper
(2:18 PM)
Maxx Williams, Minnesota; Clive Walford. Tyler Kroft.
-
Joe (Philly)
Are the Jets the favorites for Mariota after the Bradford/Foles trade?
Mel Kiper
(2:20 PM)
I think Washington too. John Clayton said yesterday that if Mariota is there for Washington, they're taking him. Jay Gruden isn't a huge fan of RGIII. Everyone is assuming Leonard Williams is going to Tennessee, but we'll see. He could go 1, 2, 5, 6, 7.
-
brian (fl)
Who are some of the prospects that have significantly changed scouts opinion from the end of the season through to this point in the draft process?
Mel Kiper
(2:23 PM)
From a positive standpoint, guys moving up from the end of the season: David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa; Tre McBride, WR, William and Mary; DJ Humphries, OT, Florida; Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State; Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA; Lynden Trail, OLB, Norfolk State; Eli Harold, OLB, Virginia; Jalen Collins, CB, LSU; Byron Jones, CB, UConn; Erik Rowe, CB, Utah.
-
willeyeam [via mobile]
Should my rams go receiver or oline in the first now that they got their qb?
Mel Kiper
(2:24 PM)
It eliminates QB from their needs list. They got Foles. They brought back Case Keenum. Foles is still a young guy. You don't have to worry about drafting a QB. OL is an area you put at the top. WR. CB. RB. Those are the need areas.
-
Ben (PA)
Do the Bears still go defense in rd1 or is Cooper/White in play after the departure of Marshall?
Mel Kiper
(2:25 PM)
They could. They added Eddie Royal, but he's more of a 3 or 4 WR. They added Rolle at safety. And McPhee at LB. So you've done some things there, but you could definitely add an Amari Cooper. They could use a NT. Danny Shelton would still be a possibility.
-
Risen Star (CowboysZone)
What is your exact address?
hawkfaninMT (MT)
Thoughts on Ifo from Oregon? pro Day could impact stock of course, but where do you see him going and what round? Would love for him to fall to the Hawks 4th as a slot CB
Mel Kiper
(2:26 PM)
Had he been healthy and not gotten hurt so late in the year, I think he could have been a second round pick. With the medical, you have to wait to see when they think he'll be ready, I think more of a second day pick.
-
Dennis (Denver)
Since the Broncos have not yet addressed their needs for a right OT or a NT in free agency, which do you see them going for in the first round, and which in the second?
Mel Kiper
(2:27 PM)
When you look at what they lost, they loss Orlando Franklin and Julius Thomas. But they brought in Owen Daniels. ILB, OL, WR, DL. Those are the big areas of need going in. Cameron Erving, OT/C, FSU, could be a nice addition to Denver's OL.
-
Derek (FL)
If the colts have a decent defensive draft, do you think they've closed the gap between them and the patriots?
Mel Kiper
(2:29 PM)
Closing the gap? You think about the defense and look at where the improvement is coming. They're going to have to show some upgrades as a defense overall. Frank Gore is a veteran RB, but I think they'll still draft a RB. And you get a veteran WR Andre Johnson. But you still look at the team and they still need a RT, a young RB, young WR, S, DE. They still have a lot of needs. They need some quality young players in the draft.
Mel Kiper
(2:29 PM)
But Andre Johnson seems highly motivated. And everyone thought Steve Smith was done and he came in and gave Baltimore a great year.
-
Mike (Mission Viejo, CA)
Are the rumors of Washington and the Eagles wanting Mariota the nest case scenario for the Raiders picking at #4? Seems like they could get a decent haul for trading their pick.
Mel Kiper
(2:33 PM)
It depends. It depends on whether Washington will feel a need to move up one spot. I don't see Philadelphia, based on what Chip Kelly said, having interest. But I think Washington could move up to stop the Jets from getting Mariota. Teams have moved up one spot before. Baltimore moved up one spot to get Ngata. The Giants moved up to get Jeremy Shockey.
-
James (England)
If a healthy Todd Gurley was in the draft 15 years ago, where would he get drafted?
Mel Kiper
(2:35 PM)
Oh, top 3-5, even in the top 2. If he had been healthy all year and finished the process the way he could have. Trent Richardson went third just in 2012 and Cleveland moved up one spot to get him. On the Big Board right now, Gurley would have been probably the fifth player. I would say even the fourth.
-
Mikey (Lackawanna ny)
Mel, what are the chances D.Green Beckham falls into the 2nd rd?
Mel Kiper
(2:37 PM)
Yeah. A real good chance. He has first round talent and upside. He has size. Can run. He is still rough around the edges. And he has off the field issues. Plus he has the year of inactivity. Definitely.
-
Adam (PHX)
How much did Benardrick McKinney hurt his stock at the combine? 2nd rounder now?
Mel Kiper
(2:38 PM)
He's always been a borderline first. He's a great athlete. He's probably going to be an early to mid second round pick. I thought possibly about putting him in the late first round to Green Bay, but I didn't. I think he's probably an early to mid 2.
Mel Kiper
(2:38 PM)
Looks like Murray will sign with the Eagles.
-
Ryan Rosenfeld (Highland Park IL)
How do you think Mariota will adjust to the NFL's style of play
Mel Kiper
(2:39 PM)
He will adjust fine, in terms of the work ethic and all that. The big thing will be adapting to the pro game. Going through the progressions. Finding them and being accurate. Everyone thinks it's easy to come off your primary target and throw. It's not. It's something he needs to work on. That's the unknown. He's a great kid, hard worker, but can he instinctively do that remains to be seen.
-
Dan (DE)
Do you see any inside linebackers being drafted in rd1? I want my Giants to grab 1 in rd2. Who could be there??
Mel Kiper
(2:40 PM)
There are a host of second round ILB. The most intriguing is Stephon Anthony. He's a complete LB. He's probably one of the most underrated LBs in this draft.
-
Mikey (Lackawanna ny)
Any chance the Bills draft B.Petty with their 2nd rd pick?
Mel Kiper
(2:41 PM)
They could. Petty and Garrett Grayson are in line to be second round choices. Anyone looking for a QB could look at them.
-
Chet (LA)
Hey Mel, where do the Pack go with their first two picks? I don't believe there will be an ILB that is worth a pick in the 1st round, but will there be one in the 2nd round?
Mel Kiper
(2:42 PM)
DT, Jordan Phillips in the first round. In the second round, I would say you'd probably be looking at Denzel Perryman, ILB, Miami.
-
Craig (PA)
I've been hoping for Leonard Williams to the Raiders all year, any chance? Maybe QBs go 1-2 and Jags take gregory or fowler?
Mel Kiper
(2:43 PM)
I think the Raiders want a WR. Williams is arguably the best player in this draft. I couldn't see him getting to Oakland. If he's there for Jacksonville, I could see them taking him. Even Tennessee. But the Raiders need to get a WR.
-
BSB (Philly)
Do the Eagles Draft for Best Available Player now? Would that be a DB or WR?
Mel Kiper
(2:45 PM)
They've added Maxwell and Thurman, so you've gotten two CBs in free agency. You added Kiko Alonso. So you don't have to say you have to use that first pick on a CB. They could go safety like Landon Collins. That would be the big one for me. Also a WR. Jordan Matthews had a great rookie year, but they could look WR as well.
-
Mikey (Lackawanna ny)
Besides D.Shelton. Who is the best NT in this yrs draft?
Mel Kiper
(2:46 PM)
Eddie Goldman, FSU; Malcom Brown, Texas; Jordan Phillips, Oklahoma. Xavier Williams, Northern Iowa is an underrated guy. Walton, Central Michigan is another.
-
Faunz (nyc) [via mobile]
Why player in the draft has the biggest boom or bust quality?
Mel Kiper
(2:49 PM)
Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA; Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Missouri; Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn; Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan; Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami; Randy Gregory, DE/OLB, Nebraska; Danielle Hunter, DE, LSU; Carl Davis, DT, Iowa; Benardrick McKinney, Mississippi State; Bud Dupree, OLB, Kentucky; Eli Harold, OLB, Virginia; Jalen Collins, CB, LSU; Ronald Darby, CB, FSU.
-
Mark (NJ)
Who are the top 5 4-3 DE's in the draft?
Mel Kiper
(2:51 PM)
1. Randy Gregory, Nebraska; 2. Shane Ray, Missouri; 3. Dante Fowler, Florida; 4. Preston Smith, Mississippi State; Owamagbe Odighizuwa, UCLA.
-
Gordfish (San Francisco)
Mel, if Hundley went to Oregon and Mariota went to UCLA, do you think their respective draft projections would be different today?
Mel Kiper
(2:52 PM)
Interesting question. When you start mixing and matching guys, that's interesting. With Hundley in that offense, you can mask some issues in that offense. Hundley flashes. There are some games where he looks like a top 15 guy. Mariota looked great in Oregon's offense. They'll both work hard. They're both the two best QB athletes in the draft. Mariota has a better feel for pressure in the pocket. He's a little ahead as a passer. It would be interesting to see that mix and match.
Mel Kiper
(2:53 PM)
Brandon Browner just signed with the Saints.
-
Doug (Santa Barbara, CA)
Hey Mel. Do the Rams have a need at RB, as you said earlier. Wouldn't OL be a higher priority for them?
Mel Kiper
(2:54 PM)
I would say OL is a higher priority. You can find RBs later in the draft. They got Tre Mason at a bargain point. They can probably get a pretty good RB like they have been. They're the kind of team that could take Todd Gurley in the second round.
-
Chris II (Philly)
Am I the only one who feels like the Cowboys made next to no effort to resign Murray? Should that scare Eagles fans?
Mel Kiper
(2:56 PM)
They had Dez Bryant to try and sign. They only have so much money to go around. Murray was a third round draft choice so he was going to get paid. Russell Wilson was a good value, because they hit on a third round QB and they didn't have to pay him much. But Murray has a lot of wear on the tires. Dallas probably feels like they can find a RB in this draft. Duke Johnson. David Johnson. Jeremy Langford. David Cobb. They are probably confident they can find someone.
Mel Kiper
(2:58 PM)
We'll keep updating everything week to week. These free agent signings are fast and furious. We have a few just during this chat. Nate Allen. Murray. Justin Forsett. The Eagles have added seven guys the last few days via trade or signings. Dallas has lost six. Baltimore has lost 6. Arizona has signed six free agents. Jacksonville has signed 6. Those are some active teams. The Jets have yet to lose any free agents and Baltimore, Green Bay, Pittsburgh have not signed any new free agents.

Mariota has a better feel for pressure in the pocket. He's a little ahead as a passer. It would be interesting to see that mix and match.

Hey Mel. Do the Rams have a need at RB, as you said earlier. Wouldn't OL be a higher priority for them?

I would say OL is a higher priority. You can find RBs later in the draft. They got Tre Mason at a bargain point. They can probably get a pretty good RB like they have been. They're the kind of team that could take Todd Gurley in the second round.

Am I the only one who feels like the Cowboys made next to no effort to resign Murray? Should that scare Eagles fans?

They had Dez Bryant to try and sign. They only have so much money to go around. Murray was a third round draft choice so he was going to get paid. Russell Wilson was a good value, because they hit on a third round QB and they didn't have to pay him much. But Murray has a lot of wear on the tires. Dallas probably feels like they can find a RB in this draft. Duke Johnson. David Johnson. Jeremy Langford. David Cobb. They are probably confident they can find someone.
