Come on atlanta, you made that up.:muttley:

Here is what he had for pick 27

i

27. Oakland Raiders (from DAL)
Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama

I don't have another Round 1 edge rusher left on my board, so I'm moving on to tight end with the third Raiders pick of the first round. I mentioned Cook earlier, and he's a free agent, so this is going to be a need for Oakland. Smith had 44 catches and seven touchdowns for the Crimson Tide this season, and he is a really good player. He needs to improve as a blocker, but I expect him to test well at the combine. The Raiders have a ton of cap space, so they also could address the position in free agency.

Not here to argue the value of the Cooper trade, but

If you want to do apples and apples---or what Dallas honestly gave up to get Cooper--then you would place Dallas' pick where it would have been if we had not made the trade.

If we had not traded for cooper, it was looking like we might be drafting in the 8-14 range.
And then there is the cap side of this as well.

So we gave up somewhere between the 8th-14th pick (say 10) to get player for 1 1/2 seasons. Plus 14mil in 2019 and him being free after that (though we will probably sign him, it will be up to him)

He looks real good though, so I think we're okay with that

I think we did pretty good with getting Amari for the equivalent of the 27th pick. Only downside is that we won't benefit from a rookie discount contract.

Crazy deep draft. Christian Wilkenson would have been a top 15 pick last year, and he's slotted at the end of round 1 this year.

Thats a solid point. No doubt we'd be picking lower. But, that is also a measure of his true value. I don't think there is a WR in this draft who would have impacted the team like he did...............and he didn't even get a training camp with Dak!

I just put Amari in bold. You'll see pick 27A beneath

It does show his value. The team that lost ground here was Oakland. When they traded with us they were looking at the 10 pick or so, but by the time the draft came around, it was 27th. Ouch

There is the other argument that people never mention though.
We got Cooper as a 1 1/2 year (possible) expensive rental vs a 5 year cheap contract.
I think the Raiders feared losing him on the open market--he will be unrestricted. Thy mainly just want to start fresh, I guess.

I know Jerry has always been able to keep who he really wanted to keep, but there is the possibility that a team with a better passing game, QB, and huge cap space could snag Cooper after 2019.

That is not what we got him for
That would be having our cake and eating it too , so to speak.

By getting Cooper, we gave up a much earlier pick, unless you think we would've ended up 10-6 without him anyway,
Furthermore, we got him for only 1 1/2 seasons guaranteed. After that he is a free agent.

I think Gruden is/was hellbent on making over the team with players chosen by and loyal to him. People always refer to his Tampa super bowl win as winning with Tony Dungy's team. I think he came back b/c he wants to build his own team and end with a better coaching legacy.

Yeah.
I guess they want a completely fresh slate when they move to Vegas.
Trading Khalil Mack was a real shock.

That was a silly move but the guy wants to stockpile draft picks. Its almost like he's trying to do what Jimmy Johnson did building the cowboys.

Not gonna happen.

the cooper move & the Mack trade ... those types of things really make me wonder if The Davis family had the money to pay those guys... i think if they are the poorest owners in the NFL... add to that the cost of the new stadium being built, it makes me wonder about the Raiders finances.

Well if you REALLY do apples to apples with what you HONESTLY gave up for Cooper, then You have to take the first round player the Raiders get and then add it to the 3-5 starters they’re about to acquire via free agency instead of the Goliath contract you’re about to pay him.

Just like the Khalil Mack trade, they dont just get 5 first rounders over the next 2 years, they also got about 35-40m$ in cap relief every year until 2025. Legitimately could build an entire defense with that.

Yeah, in Oaklands case with Cooper, the cap saving this year will be about 13 mil or so when you add and subtract everything.
So
1) whatever they can buy for 13 mil per year (maybe two so-so players or one semi-stud...if available)
2) Plus the 27 th pick

But Cooper’s contract is up after 2019 and his contract will go up.
Its not a lock that he will even be in Dallas in 2020 because he’ll be unrestricted
