Remember this play? Amani Toomer somehow kept his knee a centimeter off the ground, spun away from Knight and scored a key TD.
It took almost two full days into free agency, but there's finally word of the first player to visit the Giants: 11-year veteran safety Sammy Knight. According to someone who recently spoke to Knight, he left Denver without a contract and will soon be visiting the Giants. No word on exactly when, but probably tomorrow or Monday.
Knight had 4 INTs with the Jags last season after two seasons each with the Chiefs and Dolphins in which he had a total of 10 INTs. Knight began his career with the Saints from 1997-2002. He made the Pro Bowl after picking off a career-high six passes in 2001.
Knight, who turns 33 in September, would likely be a short-term fix for the Giants at strong safety, meaning James Butler or Michael Johnson would have to slide over to free safety to fill the hole created by the loss of Gibril Wilson to the Raiders yesterday. But in the Giants' defense, both safety spots are similar so it won't be that much of an adjustment for either player.
Knight will likely command about $2 million or less per season over two or three years -- much less than the six-year, $39-million deal Wilson got from Oakland.
