Personally, with all the talent we currently have at linebacker, I think we might not franchise Spencer, if we had it to do all over again. Just my humble opinion.

Unless it changed once they sign the tender it is gaurenteed

Fully guaranteed once the player signed, and we are past the deadline of being able to sign for a long term deal as well

Yep, then in the offseason, you can let him walk, sign him to a long-term deal, or franchise him again.

yes. its still the best option. none of the others are proven anything. they haven't shown what they can do in a REAL game.

We need all the good DL personnel we can get. I'm glad to overpay him for a season to make sure we've got coverage at OLB. I'm expecting big things from our DL this year, across the board.

I have no problems with Spencer as an OLB. He's at least adequate at most phases and responsibilities there.

I do have a significant problem with him as a pass rusher. He isn't quick enough to beat a tackle without the tackle catching him and pushing him by the pocket. His sole pash rush move consists of "patty cake", which has yet to work once in his entire career.

I feel confident in saying we don't know what we have at OLB, WR, or OL yet. I find that troublesome so close to the opener, but that's the nature of injuries.

I still would have franchised him. We would not currently have Claiborne and would have to depend on a guy like a 3rd round pick or late or a garbage FA to fill the #3 til Jenkins is back. But instead we may have traded for a guy like Bruce Irvin or pushed for a FA signee instead. But we have solved CB for the next 5 years as of right now. Next year will be focused on adding smaller pieces. A young run plugger teamed with Wilber & Hamilton (who will make the roster IMO) will give us a platoon out at SOLB. Then our draft would focus around #3 WR, NT, OG, OLB. There are plenty of pieces at WR and OLB in the next draft as well..

I think Albright will be the top backup at OLB here for a long time as well, he still can develop into a blue collar guy too IMO. I'm very excited, especially at our future at OLB here.

We realistically weren't going to do anything else with that cap space so yes it was definitely the right thing to do. Give him a full year under Rob and to see some younger guys develop. This will be Spencer's true make or break year for his future with the Cowboys.
