'Monday Night Football': My Good Snooze Spoiled

By Tony Kornheiser
Tuesday, August 8, 2006; Page E02

As he embarks on a new adventure as the third man (with Mike Tirico and Joe Theismann) in the "Monday Night Football" booth, Tony Kornheiser is taking his readers along for the ride. It's going to get awfully crowded on his bus and, for heaven's sake, don't ask if we're there yet.

Inevitably over the last few months, when anybody has engaged me about "Monday Night Football," they have asked this question: "So, are you busy getting prepared for the season?" and I always say, "Yeah, I am. Thanks for asking." But the truth is, I'm not.

The truth is, I haven't prepared at all . If there are 1,500 players in the NFL, outside of quarterbacks I know the names of maybe eight. Or 10. I know the names of all the head coaches, but with some of them, like Rod Marinelli, Brad Childress, Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy, I'm not exactly sure which teams they coach.

I figure it's Tirico's job to call the game and Theismann's job to analyze it. I can't believe anybody wants to hear my analysis of the play that just took place, especially in the third and fourth quarters when I won't even be awake. And if I am, chances are I'll have missed the big play because I was watching the Weather Channel on one of the other monitors.

I figure my job is to try to be entertaining and, frankly, how much better am I going to be at that because I know the name of the second-string left tackle? But I don't tell people that because then they would realize that they know more about football than I do and that I'm going to be a complete bomb.

Ultimately, it has to come down to roles. Whenever I ask what mine is, the suits say, "Just be yourself." Well, this is who myself is: I'm sarcastic. I'm subversive. And I haven't watched the end of one of these games in 30 years. Remember the breathtaking Commanders-Cowboys finish last year, when Mark Brunell (a player I can name) threw two TD passes in the last three minutes?

Didn't see it. Totally asleep. REM sleep, I believe.

Even my editor, Cindy, says: "You should just wing it. Wing it and fling it, baby." So that's what I've decided to do. I figure that'll get me through three or four games, until Cindy thinks of something else.

Adding Kornheiser was the lone saving grace to ESPN's destruction of the MNF tradition.

I am not sure people will "get" him. I love him on PTI but I find the show unwatchable if he is not paired with Wilbon. It will be fun to watch how things turn out.

It's gonna be a disaster.

BTW, what happened to Paul "I'm a complete idiot and everything I say is completely ********" Maguire?

Having Theismann already makes it a disaster.

I just hope Kornheiser abuses him often to make it even partially bearable.

Macguire will be doing college games this fall.

I actually never minded him. He was a fool, but he didn't mean any harm and certainly cannot help he was a clod.

I've been told that Monday Night Football is no longer necessarily a marquee NFL matchup of the week, but that honor goes to Sunday Night Football with Madden/Michaels. Is this true? Looking at the Sunday night lineup, it sure looks that way, with the only game that has me scratching my head the Oakland/Denver game. Also, I bet the "flexible scheduling" is going to push the late season games with playoff implications their way:

Sunday, Sept. 10 - Indianapolis at NY Giants
Sunday, Sept. 17 - Washington at Dallas
Sunday, Sept. 24 - Denver at New England
Sunday, Oct. 1 - Seattle at Chicago
Sunday, Oct. 8 - Pittsburgh at San Diego
Sunday, Oct. 15 - Oakland at Denver
Sunday, Oct. 29 - Dallas at Carolina
Sunday, Nov. 5 - Indianapolis at New England
Flexible Scheduling Weeks 10-15
Monday, Dec. 25 (Christmas) - Philadelphia at Dallas
Flexible Scheduling Week 17

Agreed... Actually I can semi-tolerate Dan LebRetard, depends on what day of the week it is. but if Jason Whitlock is on the set "droppin straight knowledge," I'm out. He may as well be a robot.

The NBC sched is loaded, Espn's is awful. the league wanted to make sunday night the new 'night'. and the nbc team isn't flashy, but they're still the best in the business.

yeah i'm looking forward to see what tony kornheiser can bring to the broadcast. he's actually in a win-win situation, if he does a bad job on MNF he wont look bad because its impossible to be worse than that idiot theismann and if he does a good then he will by far be the favorite announcer from the MNF broadcast.

i'm a fan of his because he is a funny guy on PTI and really believe that together Tony and Wilbon make PTI one of the best sports shows on TV. also look forward to tony's humor when the game is looking boring

Wilbon and Korneiheser are an excellent pairing, Im not sold on MNF with only Kornheiser as I cant stand watching PTI when either one of them arent there.
