as someone who regularly bashes the staff and FO, I have to give them some love and appreciation for two especially astute moves during the draft. Yes I would’ve loved to have seen a trade up for LB Edmunds or S James and maybe a few different players at a few other picks but.....
I thought sending one of our three 6th round picks to LA for Austin was brilliance. He adds speed and playmaking to our offense, or some additional teeth to give defenses more to think hard about. He also brings a meager cap hit and cost us only a sixth round pick, a pick we would’ve used to acquire a rookie with no chance of the kind of impact Austin could have and someone who probably would’ve gone to the PS or cut altogether. Now if we will use him properly, that’s another story.
Secondly, swinging Switzer for Ward was a masterful stroke. Let’s face it, Despite his lone return for a TD, he made mistakes and appeared tentative on a lot of returns even costing us a game at one point. I think he is clearly talented and could become a good player but not here. I think we made the right decision going with Beasley over Switzer. Then with all the new WRs we added, still having Beasley, and now adding Austin for returns, Switzer wasn’t making this team. So for the FO to swing him, a player at a position of abundance and redundance, for a young player with clear talent at a position of need was just fabulous. Getting something, anything, for a player we no longer have need of is just something we haven’t done in a long time it seems, let alone someone with potential.

I like the two trades as well... Austin is a more talented, versatile piece than what Dunbar used to bring to his role. Switzer was redundant and I wonder if his brashness rubbed the staff the wrong way? How coachable was he? Not sure-- but he doesn't lack for confidence for sure.

Thanks ghst, and of course I agree.
I know as reported Marinelli liked Ward and worked with him. Despite Marinelli's anti fan crowd
he works with players well so I'm hopeful we can turn the young man into a good piece.
Generally the last three days have been a fun ride for me. I want to gush with optimism but I know
the tomatoes would be flung.

Yep, they stayed with the "process". I use the word process a lot because it ticks some fans off so much. No crazy reaches up, no splashes, no miscreants, no off the wall off the wall crazy picks, no wooo hooo look at me now picks. Stayed with the board. Kudo's for the "process". The players selected? Meh, give me at least a year. AND FOR GOD'S SAKES GO AND FIND ANOTHER SAFETY!

Yessir!!! Major Kodos. I love seeing Will at the front end of every phone call. In Will I trust. (Stephen too)

Unfortunately, Tavon is a fumble machine. If they can fix that though. . .

The same fans praising Jerry for Austin will be bashing him when he lays the ball on the ground
The trade was no risk
If the player can change it can work out but Austin is not a rookie, his fumbles aren’t coming from not carrying the ball right
He’s a small guy who takes hits. If he is to stop the fumbles he has to limit the shots he takes

I give them credit for making a lot of changes. With the secondary last year, WRs this year, continuing to add on to both lines, the coaching changes. Whether it's a day late and a dollar short or not, we'll have to wait and see

Best part is, by acquiring him, he also gives us a future draft pick if we don't resign him. So, essentially we traded a 6th for Tavon Austin and a future draft pick.

Though, I think we'll wind up liking Kameron Kelly, who is the safety that we got from San Diego State. He was big time underrated in the draft process.

You do realize austin now plays in our offense and what that means? Austin is a 3rd down back, maybe he lines up as a receiver some but will start at neither position. He will get 1 or 2 jet sweeps or other gimmicks a game. doubt he sees 20 touches next year and no way he cracks 300 yards.

Unless we use him like Dunbar or Sproles. That would be the smart place to play him.

Not sure if this had anything to do with his trading to the Raiders or not, but I agree, Switzer was redundant. However, I think the Cowboys just looked at their numbers at receiver, then looked at their depth at DT, and decided to turn a player they picked in the 4th for a player Oakland took in the 2nd.

Dunbar was a preseason warrior. Not his fault but come gametime the coaches never ysed him. I think it was 2014 he had a great start to the season where the coaches actually used him.
Well, that's kinda my point. If we can use him in the capacity that Sproles was used and Dunbar was supposed to be used, then Austin should have a nice career here.

I think we envision Austin as our Sproles. I think he will have a breakout year.

I certainly hope that we do. That's a great way to spread the opposing defense. Not only will we pound teams into oblivion, but we'll stretch their resources in the process with Tavon. That's a tremendous scheme.

Yep, he adds a dimension just being on the field due to his speed.
Hopefully he won’t need to have a ton of yards, just a few big plays here and there plus forcing defenses to account for him which will open up things for others.

We got one maybe two safeties in our UDFAs. These guys are going to push people for a job. Two are impressive and the third looks good as well.
