LANDOVER, Md. – In 14 seasons and 212 career games, L.P. Ladouceur has never changed his pre-snap routine.

That’s why the Cowboys’ veteran long snapper was dumbfounded by his 5-yard ‘snap infraction’ penalty prior to Brett Maher’s 47-yard field goal try that could have tied the game in Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Washington Commanders.

The penalty pushed Maher’s attempt back to 52 yards, and his kick bounced off the left upright as time expired.

After the game, the NFL (@NFLOfficiating) tweeted this explanation of the rule: “Illegal ball movement by the center … causes the defense to come across the neutral zone and contact a lineman.”

I got no issue with the penalty for this particular game.

Overall though, it’s getting really hard to have faith in the NFL product when calls like theses affect the outcomes of games and seasons. It’s getting to where we’re watching to see in what creative ways the rules will be interpreted next and not actually watching players play.

This game is broken. They need to fix it fast, because the product is becoming unwatchable. Instead of a great defensive struggle you come away questioning the integrity or capability of the officiating.

How many long snaps did he have in this game before this was called, anyway?

Should not have been called in my opinion. Had the D not jumped into the neutral zone it probably would not have been called anyway.

i bet if the tides were turned and it was the skins kicking the game tying field goal and their snapper did that and our lineman ran across the line I BET we would of been flagged. One-sided officiating. Just like on the Commanders first touchdown. How do you not call block in the back. It happened right in front of the rb to the guy who could of made the tackle smh.

I largely agree, but when I watch good teams like the Chiefs and Rams play, those games are pretty entertaining.
