To get some more information about that transition, we gathered thoughts from his three All-Pro teammates: Tyron Smith, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick.

"You can tell when you see him on the field how athletic he is and how explosive he can be," Frederick said Monday from the team's annual home run derby. "I think those are good qualities for a tackle as far as measurables.

"He's got super long arms and he's got good things going for him. So if he can make that transition I think it's going to be helpful."

The move from left guard means Collins will go from lining up between Frederick and Smith to playing next to Martin. So at either position, Collins has the benefit of working next to one of the best in the business.

"I think it would definitely be an adjustment for anyone," Martin said. "Doug has played that position for so long, ever since I've been here. Whoever that ends up being, we got a lot of time and training camp to get to know each other and play next to each other."

Collins played left tackle and left guard at LSU but most experts projected him to be a right tackle in the NFL.

Smith has been a Pro Bowl left tackle the last four seasons. He credits Free for helping show him the way.

Now that he's the oldest veteran starting on the line, Smith plans to do the same for Collins.

"I'm helping him out the best way I can, technique or anything he has a question on," Smith said. "He's working his butt off to try to get ready for that spot."

With his talent, if he is working hard it will come together.

I highly doubt we can resign him.Essentially he will be auditioning this year.
Seems to be a good thing for us. Hopefully he does fantastic and we're able to resign him to a long term deal! On the other hand, this wouldn't hit my radar until Collins has been starting and consistently dominating- hmm:rolleyes: 10 to 12 games.

If he looks really good by the end of the season Jerry will make his move to sign him long term; and the good news is that with only one year of showing such he will not be able to command top price.

All I really ' know' about this cat is that beautiful lead block he was pushing 40 yards down the left side of the field his rookie year , it was pretty much poetry in motion, I remember seeing something you JUST don't see regularly in the N.F.L.,,,, I don't think " quit" is in his vocabulary.

Little doubt he can have some of the most dominating plays as anyone in the sport. We've seen him bulldoze 2 and 3 guys in a single down.

The question is how well he avoids the bad plays.

Garrett still butthurt that Free is gone. One of the local sports guys said Free retired because the Joneses told him he would have to take a paycut to stay.

Whatever gets the job done!

Hopefully this is all code for Chaz Green is unreliable and we are dumping him soon.

I think that's a real possibility. In his short "career" in the NFL, the guy has already had significant surgeries to his hip and back, in addition to his injury list from college. Based on that alone, I don't see how it's smart for an NFL team to depend on him.

If he misses any more time, or isn't ready to go for the offseason program, he may not be a factor at all for 2017.

Yep. It won't be the physical stuff, but the mental.

If he "gets it" at RT, we could have our next Erik Williams.

Was that a hypothesis or a scoop? I don't really care either way, but I've been around sports guys talking and know there's a difference.

I have no problem with that.

I know T. Romo danced on the edges many times to extend plays, but several of the hits/knocks he took can be backtracked straight to that guy just flat out getting beat .
