In a two-year forecast (PDF) released earlier this month by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages Lake Mead, the lake is expected to drop another 20 feet into record territory by summer 2016. Well before then, perhaps as soon as next April, downstream water rationing will kick in—which has never happened before.

The scenarios only get worse from there. According to a New York Times interview with John Entsminger of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, “If Lake Mead goes below elevation 1,000, we lose any capacity to pump water to serve the municipal needs of seven in 10 people in the state of Nevada.” City of Las Vegas, consider this your official warning.

A man-made lake in the middle of a desert drying up? Really? Who could have ever imagined that?:)

I wouldn't worry too much about Vegas . I don't think that city has much of a future. Gambling is pretty much legal in every state. Throw in on-line gambling and I don't even know why anyone would consider going to Vegas. Lake Mead will dry up and Vegas will be a ghost town. It will happen, it is just a matter of time.

A reminder before another gets themselves in trouble... Leave politics off of the zone.

Never been have you?

Been there twice. Didn't like it at all. Not surprising, since I hate gambling. So, what is the fascination with Vegas? Gambling? Showgirls? Atmosphere? Lots of bright lights? Alcohol/drugs? All of that is available pretty much anywhere in the US, or, at least, within a short drive.

What can you get in Vegas that you can't get anywhere else?

Here in CA our Lakes are terrible. I've been to mead it's beautiful. I will just stick to the River and Lake Havasu. But our local lake I've been going to for years has no beaches since the drought.

How is Pyramid Lake looking up there in the Grapevine? I miss that place and can't wait to get back there.

Just showed this to my dad. He visited Las Vegas and was at Lake Mead back in the mid-50's. His jaw almost hit the floor.
