Lakers: Small Talent Pool May Doom Them For Years

In one sense, the enormous problem facing the Lakers, is the NBA’s fault, one born out of greed.

In 1996, the NBA welcomed into its gracious arms, the Toronto Raptors andVancouver Grizzlies. They added the New Orleans Hornets, in 2003. The league of 27 teams went to a league of 30 teams. 45 players were added, the majority of them marginally talented, at best. On a macro scale, this had a significant consequence. The thirst for more revenue ensured that every season seven or eight teams were going to be atrocious; talent wins games.

The NBA’s theory of capitalism increased the wealth of billionaires who reaped in the benefits of billion dollar television contracts, revenue sharing, gate revenue and ripping customers off with exorbitant parking fees. The owners profited but the league as a whole suffered.

There are too many teams and a small pool of talent to go around. Too many franchises are fighting over, at the most, 10 players. A lot of teams are going to be on the outside looking in come July 2015. Acquiring talent is the hardest it has ever been in the NBA.

Nah...
The Lakers will be okay...
Free Agents will come there.... and guys like Thon Maker is waiting in the wings

There has always been a handful of talented players in the NBA. While they have salary cap per se there is no penalty for missing on players. Teams can pare down their payroll in essence being JV teams for the big boys. Overall talent in the NBA has fallen more due to the game being more about scoring and less about defense, many players are just not good scorers, and the good scorers for the most part barely play defense so the NBA has become very one sided and if you cannot avg double digit points you are considered a bad player.

Why are they any more doomed than any other team in the NBA?

The ridiculous trade for Steve Nash and the Dwight Howard debacle - both self inflicted wounds - did more to doom them than anything else.

Max deal for a declining kobe isn't helping either

They are just on the wrong side of the pendulum.

Its basically 1993 for them

Kobe sitting out multiple game to rest cause he's (his words) old. They're sure getting their money's worth

ROFL.
Lakers fans and even media were certain they'd have 5 All-Star's by now....

The league doesn't work that way anymore.

The LA draw has always been overstated. We saw how little Shaq or any Laker has really done in TV.
Rick Fox may be the only guy who could make a living off LA lifestyle morphing into entertainment industry connections.

You have LAC, SAC and GSW all offering the same basic residence choices.

The Lakers killed their cap for a declining Kobe who isn't even grateful. He feels he's underpaid....

The Lakers should be moving some of the talent they have to accumulate future assets.
Not pretending to play to win knowing they won't make the playoffs.
