Landon Collins is the only player in NFL History with at least 100 solo tackles, 4 sacks, 5ints, and 13 passes defended in a season.
Not that this isn't great, but holy multiple endpoints, Batman! "Collins is the only player in NFL history with...at least..." Yes, technically this is true, but there are so many things wrong with it:
1. Passes defended has only been recorded starting in 2001, so when you say "in NFL history" you mean "in the last 16 years."
2. Collins didn't have "at least" those numbers, he had exactly each of those numbers. The stat is constructed so that he can squeak in but it excludes others with as good or better seasons who just miss in one category. For instance, in 2013, Karlos Dansby had 114 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 4 ints and 19 PDs. Those are much better numbers in the aggregate than Collins's (he also had 2 returns for TDs to Collins's 1), but he doesn't make the cut for lack of one interception. Change it to 4 ints and 14 PDs and now we can say that "Karlos Dansby is the only player in NFL history with at least...". It's not informative.
The funny thing is, if we relax the criteria, Collins comes out looking perhaps even better. Let's look at the list of guys with, say, 90 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 ints and 10 passes defended:
Landon Collins 2016 (100, 4, 5, 13)
Karlos Dansby 2013 (114, 6.5, 4, 19)
Rodney Harrison 2003 (92, 3, 3, 11)
Ray Lewis 2001 (112, 3.5, 3, 10)
Brian Urlacher 2007 (92, 5, 5, 12)
Wow. Now I'm paying attention. That's a heckuva list of guys for Collins to be on, and only Dansby's season is clearly better. Especially impressive when you consider that Collins was only 22 and the other guys were all at least 26 when they did this.
