Landry vs Parcells

Guys:

One concern I have with Parcells is (I think) his complete control of the offensive and defensive game plans. Tom Landry had this approach during the last few years of his career with the Cowboys. There are a couple of problems with this approach, 1) You can get spread too thin, 2) You stifle the DC and OC, which leads to discontent on the staff, and 3) The best OC and DC don't want to come on a staff that operates in this manner.

I wasn't a total fan of Jimmy Johnson, but he always gave his OC and DC a lot of leeway to design the game plans and he held them accountable.

If BP does come back another year I hope he gets an OC and DC and gives them more control and the game plans. He could always give them general guidelines on how he wants to approach the game.

Thoughts?

Umm, why in the twilight of his career would the Big Guy fly in the face of his own philosophy and relinquish control? Typically the older we get, the more set in our ways we get, unless death is on the line.

I'd agree if BP had Belichick-caliber coordinators, or someone was available along those lines that could work with him, but the evidence seems to be mounting that he's suffering from a lack of that strong supporting cast, particularly Mumbles. That's probably what interests me the most about the off-season: how much will they fix the "braintrust".

I'll say he's out unless he takes them to the NFC championship game.

I agree that he should allow his coordinators to do their jobs, or don't hire one. He can easily just hire a lines coach and call the plays himself.

Two words, Sean Payton.

Parcells has hinted for 3 years that he has a philosophical approach to the offense and defense, and that he has to stay on his assistants to make them understand that you can't just be aggressive all the time, he has to tone them down.

He also doesn't like his assistants to enguage in banter with the media (which is no proof) but it's the sign of a control freak.

Also, this 3-4 is not a Zimmer defense, this is all Parcells. Last thing -- We had never seen offensive play calling like we've seen from Sean Payton this year, last year. This means to me that Parcells called the plays and would not let Sean do squat.

No true evidence, but if you pay attention to all the signs, Parcells is controlling everything including how players do certain things in stead of just playing.

Except we're seeing it this year.

I thought we were offensive, hell people here are complaining we aren't being conservative enough and establishing the run.

Zimmer had problems BEFORE Parcells and since Parcells. Common thread-Zimmer.

If you would watch the sidelines during the game, it is clear that it is Zimmer calling what is going on on the field.

I agree. But who designs the game plan on defense? Who decides what plays are inserted in that game plan? IMO, the design of the defense is bad, not necessarily the game day calling, it's the design.

Think what you want about Parcells but the looks he was giving Zimmer when the Lions kept getting 3rd down conversions said it all. It is Zimmer's fault.

I will say this much though, if it isn't Zimmer, then who will G.R.O.Z. blame?

Normally the coaches meet through out the week when putting together a game plan that would also include Parcells. Myself I don't think the game plan is the problem as much as it is our players making the right reads and making the right adjustments which has lead to FB and TE being wide-open because someone is not making the right reads. Normally the MLB (ILB) is the one calling out the adjustments as the offense comes to the line and he sees the formation they are in as well as adjustments as the offense is using motion.

Landry had less control over the schemes his last few years. He gave more control to his coordinators his last few seasons than in previous years.

Mumbles is not doing as well as when he had Charlie and Romeo as his coordinators. If all comes down to the staffs in todays NFL.

Personally, I think Parcells and Zimmer should go. Zimmer hasn't shown anything since he's been DC, and Parcells has proven to be a mediocre game day coach.
