Landry vs. Walsh coaching trees

I am sick of Landry not getting full credit for his contribution to coaching. I edited (I hope it sticks) a wikipedia article on Walsh which had his tree.

It erroneously lists coaches like Shanahan, Fox, Fassel (all Landry via Reeves) as Walsh disciples. It even lists Jeff Fisher as one. If anything he is also a Landry branch Landry/Ditka/Ryan/Fisher.

I'm waiting to see George Halas being called a Walsh follower.

Shanahan ran the WCO in San Fran so that's probably what they're yapping about and Fisher was once an assistant in San Francisco so they'll try and plug him in that pool as well.

Funny thing is that Fisher and Shanahan both employ power running games that rely on zone blocking since they became head coaches.

Oh and I'd remove Ryan from the Landry tree, those two had no love lost for one another.

I don't consider Ryan part of Landry's tree, but Fisher is more tied to Landry than Walsh b/c of Ditka.

This is a very interesting thread.

What would be the criteria for belonging to who's tree?

Is it simply.... He was Landry's waterboy?

or more complex than that? ie. he served in some decent level capacity under ___________.

As much as I hate to say it Buddy Ryan has his own tree since he coached his own defense and didn't really learn anything from Ditka. Fisher is more a part of that Ryan tree than Walsh or Landry either one. Shanahan uses as much or more of Landry's offensive scheme (via Reeves) as he does Walsh's. The Shotgun in general is a Landry inovation; even though he WAS NOT the first to use it he was the first to work it into an offense in a way that made it effective. Before Landry the shotgun was a fad offense that had very limited success much like the run-n-shoot (also refered to as the chuck-n-duck).

BTW Chan Gailey was also from the Landry tree (though we might not want to talk about that)

I would say he served as a coordinator or at least served for several years with one of them or one of their deciples. Any Reeves or Ditka deciple would certainly be considered a Landry Tree coach.

Gene Stallings was a Landry deciple though most of his success came in the college ranks.

I would list Stallings as Landry/Bear Bryant disciple
