Alright I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)

This just started kinda 2 days ago.

I was just about to go to bed and watch a movie on my computer, while I was laying in bed, I fell asleep with my computer unplugged and obviously the computer just ran out of battery.

Then the next day, I have my laptop on, just sitting on my desk, plugged in. I go take a shower, and when I got back the computer got turned off. The battery didn't run out because it was plugged in so I don't know why the thing turned off.

I start it back up and then it asks if I want to restart in safe mode, and all that stuff, because it didn't shut down properly. So I start it up regularly and then I just leave it alone again for 20-30 minutes, come back and the laptop shut itself down again improperly. It did this 4 times yesterday. The only way it stays on for more than 30 minutes is when I am actually USING the computer, like typing and browsing the web and what not.

When I leave the computer alone just running a virus scan, it will shut down.

Does ANYONE have a clue why the computer would shut itself down improperly because I am not "using" it?

Try running it without the battery. That will tell you if there is a problem with it. If it still shuts down you have a problem with the ac adapter. Also try turning off the power save features.

It will shut down after like 25 minutes without the battery.
The battery meter shows it is is at like 70% when the computer shuts down without being plugged in.

Theres nothing wrong with the battery, im pretty sure.

Nowwwwww I was just on my computer, using it, typing and stuff and it shut down on me while plugged in.

So now im really confused. :bang2:

(on someone else's computer now)

What kind of laptop is it? I've seen failing hard drives or bad sectors on a hard drive cause this to happen on laptops. Try running a chkdsk or a drive diagnostic. If it's a Dell, you can press F11 for the boot menu when starting up and there should be a drive diagnostic.

I had a dell but then THE DAY the warranty ran out it died on me so I am never getting one again.

I had to get a new laptop quick and didn't have the cash to buy a really good one so I had to buy an Acer Aspire 5610Z. It has been great up to this point, no problems at all.

I'll run a chkdsk asap.

So you pulled the battery out and it's running only on the ac adapter...correct?

Did you disable the power save features?

Also have you installed all of the Vista updates?

I think what Yeag is saying is to take the battery out of the laptop and try to boot it up when it's plugged in.

Ahhh okay, didnt understand that, my bad.

I am running a chkdsk at the moment, I will do so when it's done. Hopefully it doesnt shut down in the middle of the chkdsk.

Don't judge Dell by one computer. I have bought 100's of them and have had serious problems with maybe 2 or 3. The only difference is I'm buying the business class laptops.

True, maybe I am being pretty harsh.

But that really pissed me off when it died on the last day of the warranty and they wouldn't do a thing about it. :(

Well the idiot I am, I have never cleaned the vents before....:bang2:

So I guess when I had the computer sitting on my bed, it collected a ****load of dust and lint and clogged the vents.

So I cleaned those and it looks to be running much quieter and smoother.
