Welp...at least all four of the wins in the last ten years are against the Giants.

We treat the first few weeks like it’s preseason. But hey, all the recent titles gives them the benefit of the doubt
Lately we have, because I don’t believe our key starters have seen the field in preseason the last three years. We come out rusty and can’t seem to get into a rhythm offensively. What’s concerning heading into the opener on Sunday is we have a new offense and our starters haven’t seen any live game reps. Cooks and Dak haven’t worked together in an actual game. We should have given our starting offense at least a couple of series in preseason. We looked dreadful offensively in the opener last season. Dak was awful! If we look anything like that on Sunday night, we’re going to be starting the season 0-1. I’m just hoping we have some resemblance of a running game, so we’re not forced to air it out all night.

Well we lost to the same TB team on opening night that we handedly beat in the playoffs last season but it didn't really do much good the next week. I am not totally sold on "saving" them just because it is pre-season. We still lost a guy we didn't want to with Overshown. I'd rather the offense be ready and the defense be in the mode. Even if it takes just one series. The coaches should know.

I think Tampa was a little better starting the season than when they ended it last year. They started the 2022 season 2-0. The Cowboys were downright dreadful against them in the opener. Dak had one of his worst performances ever. He ended up having one of his best performances against them in the playoffs. Our offense was night and day better against them in the playoffs.

You get what I mean though right? It's better for the starting units to have a few snaps. That's what I think at least. Season to season is obviously different. We'll see I guess.

That’s what I’m saying, our starters needed a few preseason snaps. Dak hasn’t taken a hit or faced a live pass rush since last January. He didn’t play last season heading into the opener. Pollard was handled delicately in training camp. He wasn’t even a full go at the start of camp. He hasn’t taken a hit since he was injured, No telling how he’s going to look. He could end up being a little tentative. We didn’t even play Vaughn in the final preseason game and he’s a rookie. He only had 13 carries in preseason. I don’t like the way we handled preseason.

In the last ten season openers:

The Cowboys have scored a combined 32 points in the 1st quarter. That's two TD's and six FG's.

The last season opener the Cowboys won on the road was in 2012 against the Giants.

We were a completely different team from the opener. Like you said it was night and day difference. If we played like that in the opener then we easily win that game. Dak had one of the worst games of his career in the opener last year. I see both sides of the play or don’t play in preseason argument. That’s a tough call cuz of a major player does get hurt than the coach is blasted for it. But the come out rusty then the coach gets blasted for it. So that’s why the coaches make the big money. I feel our defense will be on point this game and it’ll make up for a slow start by the offense. And I don’t think Dak can play any worse than last year’s opener.

Anyway, I’m excited for the season. I can wait to put my Parsons jersey on and lay in the couch and watch some football.

This means nothing to me. Two different teams facing each other for the first game of 2023. I am more concerned about the Cowboys injuries and the fact their first team offense has not played a down in a game scenario yet. Will they come out rusty and fall behind?

We are going to learn a lot about this team this week. You know Dabol is going to have the Giants come out on fire to start the game.

1-4 in our last 5. Bubble wrapping the starters in preseason so they get no tune up sure has paid dividends in those openers. Since we win 12 games we don't need to worry about the 1 seed. We can afford to throw away games that make the difference in the seeding and HFA. No need to self examine why this is happening. Frankly, Jones probably has no idea about this trend, nor would he change his mind if he did much like those curtains.

Except it's not evidence that playing the starters in the preseason helps. We lost plenty of openers back when the starters did play in preseason, like in 2018 (in 2020, there was no preseason, so nobody played). In 2021, when the starters didn't play in preseason, we put up 29 points and 450 yards on offense against the defending SB champions, and that was with our kicker (who DID play in the preseason) missing three kicks.
This is a team that wins 12 games a year. The only logical reason for consistently losing the opener is that the starters are rusty and need the reps as a tune up.
