In reading the multiple posts on Sean becoming our next head coach, most were in favor except
for one major stumbling block: Compensation to the Saints.

Tampa gave the Raiders 2 # ones and 2 # two draft picks for Gruden.

That's a non starter for me.

With how weak the Cowboys have been with free agency, drafting well has kept them competitive,
we need our premium draft picks to stay relevant.

So from the outside it appears Payton has a great relationship with the Saints Ownership and GM.
He had written into one of his recent HC contracts that if the GM or ownership changed he was released from the contract.

That tells me they have a great relationship.

Now if Sean after a year off wanted to coach the Cowboys it would seem to me that the Saints would not
hold the Cowboys hostage with outrageous compensation demands out of respect, loyalty and mutual respect for Payton?

Maybe a token 2nd rounder ?

Honestly, I think Payton left NO because he is burnt out and looking to get away from the sidelines at least for now. a Year or 2 from now if Payton is looking to get back to coaching then great I would love to have him but right now a burnt out HC is not good for anyone.

Not a chance, Payton is walking out on them and leaving them holding the Taysom Hill bag. Brees was the magic, not Payton. He is a mediocre coach and not worth a 2nd rounder.

I don't know if you are aware but Saints fans hate the Cowboys and always have. Gayle Benson would have a revolt if she cut Booger a deal.

I don't think the Saints cap situation helped any. Mickey Loomis kicked that can down the road pretty good, and the bill comes due this year.

Would love to have Payton, but it makes no sense with Jerry Jones at the helm. He would continue with the ridiculous OC arrangement (See Garrett 2007) and still pay a high bounty for a HC who will be like the current one. Just a conversational piece to keep the team relevant.

I have pretty much given up on the hope of the Cowboys winning a Championship as long as the Jones family is running football ops. Their performance has been historically uneven and middle of the pack. You can set your calendar by their performance. Oh, look at that, 2022, an even year, 8-9 with no playoff appearance.

Agreed, I mentioned in my OP a year off before he came back.
Shoot, he may never want to come back after some time off from the pressure cooker.

If he chooses to come back, the Cowboys aren't the only team who would be interested. So now you'd have competing offers to the Saints driving up the price.

Not sure why a guy with multiple options would choose to work for Jerry, either.

Possible, I thought maybe after all he has done for the Franchise they might want to reward him, but probably wishful thinking on my part.

I think he’s had enough blunders, with New Orleans. He’s not going to help us anymore than Mike

Agree, with the Jones in control the future is bleak.
Was hopeful Sean had enough skins on the wall for Jerry to give him more control like with Parcells.

Familiarity.
He also has family roots in Dallas.

True, Payton has been HC for 16 years and unlike players coaches do not get much time off. I actually think he did a good job with what he had last season in NO with Hill and Siemian at QB and yet Saints went into the final game with a chance at post season.

Outstanding Job with what he had at QB.
Wonder what he could do with Dak ???

I agree. Given the players he had to make due without, I thought Payton was a coach of the year candidate. I think he definitely would have been in consideration had they managed to make it to the playoffs or win a game if they did.

LOL. They were 5-2, with Winston before getting hurt and Payton completely cut down his INT numbers. He had thrown 14 TDs and only 3 INTs.

And Hill got hurt. And they still went 4-1 to end the season and if it weren’t for the complete breakdown of the Rams against the 49ers, they would have been in the playoffs.

They were completely robbed from a Sb appearance just two years back on that PI by the Rams.

Not just with Dak but with the team in general. Having said that I expect McCarthy to do the job, this is his 3rd season and we saw this team go from 6-10 injured team to 12-5 in his 2nd year. My main hurdle with Garrett was a constant 1 step forward and 1 step back. Playoffs with good record 1 season to out of the playoffs the next. I expect to see more out of McCarthy and feel he deserves this 3rd season.

He wants to go back to coaching the Warriors and win that championship.
