Last win against Philly

The controversial win against Philadelphia last year in week 17 may have been one of the most fortunate wins of the last 10 years for Dallas.

If Dallas lost they would have had a better draft pick. They very well might have drafted Patrick Peterson, maybe even moved up a little to get him. In one game they won a game against a hated rival and avoided drafting a DB who has looked more miss than hit in favor of a rock solid tackle who can anchor the line for another 10-15 years.

Funny how things work out sometimes.

Well, there have been some who argued that if Dallas had drafted earlier, the Falcons might have offered us that giant bundle of picks so that they could take Julio Jones.

It may have happened. If I recall, Peterson was drafted a little higher than expected. Maybe 4th. I don't think we coulda pulled off the trade up from 6 and would've traded down for Smith.

Or maybe a trade down with the Falcons and back up for Smith. But in the end, if we're drafting Smith 8th, 9th or 10th, we probably only end up netting an extra 2nd, maybe less.

BTW I know the week 17 game meant nothing, but I and maybe the team feels a little better going into Philly having won there the last two times.

If we were smart we would have drafted Tyron anyway. Patrick Peterson was fool's gold. He wasn't going to impact this team in any way.

But I get what you're saying and you're probably correct.

Or we could've traded back, picked up a valuable 3rd round pick or so, and taken Smith anyway.

Was beating a bunch of Eagles second and third teamers worth a third round pick? Some would claim so.

We would have had the 6th pick. PP was already gone. I don't think we move up to get him. We take smith at 6 or move down. Might have lost smith if we moved down too far

You are right, draft picks are worth more than wins in NFL.

I wouldn't be among them.

Draft picks are worth more than wins that mean nothing in terms of contention.

A third or even fourth would've been worth more than that particular win.

Seems obvious, doesn't it? Especially when you're beating a team of backups. If we'd knocked the Eagles out of the playoffs or something, maybe I could see it.

Although I don't agree with the evaluation of the players ( Peterson should break out at some point ), I certainly support your premise. Last year I was on the side of winning the game and damn the draft pick position. I've been a draftnick since 1983 and although I'm no " talent evaluator ", experience has taught me that " impact players " can be found just about in any round and any pick. Having the higher pick is always preferable, but it is by no means a guarantee.

Also, had Dallas lost, their schedule would differ by two games: Carolina and Minnesota (3-11 combined) rather than Detroit and Tampa Bay (9-5 combined).

Really ? I'd rather have that win against the Beagles last year than an extra 3rd round pick or moved up to the 6th pick, or whatever. The win didn't mean anything when it came to the Cowboys contending, but it meant alot to an interim headcoach, soon to be permanent, when it came to credibility and respect in that lockerroom.

What kind of message would Jason Garrett be sending to this team if he tanked that game for sake of a " better draft pick " ?

I often wonder what league some of you have been watching for the past few years. It seems like some of you are stuck in the 80's and 90's when the draft was 12 rounds, there was no free agency, and 2nd and 3rd, and 4th...etc..etc, round picks stuck around for 3, 4, 5, or even 6 years as team hope they'd develop. Take a look at the last 5 years in the draft and start with the 3rd round itself. How many of those are still in the league, much less starting, and even less playing at a probowl level ?

Tell you what. Use the Cowboys themselves. Take a look at the past five 3rd round picks they've had, and how many are still in the roster. Hell, compare them to the undrafted free agents they've signed over that same time period and let's see the results.

I'm as happy as anyone with Tyron Smith, but anyone who thinks Patrick Peterson will be a bust is crazy. He'll have his growing pains, but he's simply too gifted to not be an elite corner someday.

I wonder what Rob would have done with Peterson. Im sure if we drafted him, he would be very solid in our Def.

Peterson was drafted a little lower than expected. Many draft experts had him as the best player in the draft.

I don't care how unpopular it is but I have never, ever, cared about that draft position crap.

I'd rather we beat people, rather it means anything in relation to contention or any of that stuff, than to lose just so we could pick a few spots higher.

I'm sorry if that's not cool with the draft crowd but winning, no matter if its the only win you have or the 14th win, is important to me.
