The 49ers have been taking advantage of this lately and its really a good strategy. Grab guys in late rounds who would have gone much higher if not for getting injured this year.

Vinnie Sunseri, S, Bama- Currently projected as a 5th rounder- No clue why he came out after missing most of the year and still having a year of eligibility left. None the less, he could represent a great value in the 5th. Very talented kid and coaches son.

Spencer Long, G, Nebraska- Currently projected as a 6th/7th rounder- 2nd team all-american last year and was on the short list for the outland trophy before tearing his acl the 1st game of the season. Solid as they come and extremely hard working (former walk on), probably would have been a 3rd rounder if not for the injury.

Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford- Currently projected as a 5th/6th rounder- Played in only 8 games this season and had 7.5 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 9 hurries, 1 forced fumble, and 1 punt block. Big and strong as an ox. Smart and an absolute grinder. Great guy to have in any d line rotation

Silas Redd, RB, USC- Currently projected as a 7th rounder- Being from the northeast and a big PSU fan I had such high hopes for Silas. Unfortunately things went wrong at PSU and then he went to USC and got hurt for a lot of his time there. Obviously I dont have the medicals on his knee, but if there is no serious structural damage I think he's definitely worth taking a flier on. Averaged over 5 yards per carry in almost 600 carries throughout his college career.

Anybody have their own to add? I'm sure there's a few more that I missed

Morgan Breslin, DE, USC- Currently projected as a 4th/5th rounder- Injured a bunch this year and never really got going but had 19.5 TFL and 13.5 sacks last year. Relentless pass rusher who never gives up. Another good guy to have in your d line rotation.

Good idea for a thread here...like Breslin the most out of that list. I don't think Sunseri fell because of injuries, I don't think he's really that good.

? Sunseri tore his acl in early October. He had 2 int returns and 4 pass break ups in the few games he did play. I'm not saying he's a stud or anything, but he is a legit prospect. Don't think its far fetched to say he would be going in the 3rd if not for the injury.

Rumor has it that Sunseri came out because he did not think he was going to start for Bama this upcoming year.

DT-Chris Whaley, Texas (6-3/295) -- HS RB and lined up at RB his freshman year at UT. Maybe just starting to scratch the surface. Hometown kid and thin DT depth might make him an easy get as an UDFA.

DT-Kaleb Ramsey, Boston College (6-3/285) -- thought he was on the verge back in 2010. Injured back in early 2011 led to redshirt. Foot injury shelved him for 2012. Granted a 6th year for 2013 and really wasn't the player he was and just played a reserve role. If he returns to 2010 form, he'd be a good fit for 3-tech.

WR-Chris Boyd, Vanderbilt (6-4/215) -- not an injury per se, unless stupid can be considered a brain injury. Was suspended for the season due to association with players involved in a rape case. Wasn't involved in the rape, but was suspended for giving accused teammates advice on cover up. Declared early.

This guy has been mentioned, but QB-Aaron Murray should be on this list...without injury and if he had a successful year, could've gone reasonably early (1st/2nd round)...probably in the 4th/5th range currently

Ben Gardner is going to rise and i i expect him to be a 2-3 round pick. He should be ready for a go at his proday. That bench press should be what people look at most. If he has a good day he will rise quick. Guy is an absolute beast.

Dominique Easley? Tho he probably doesn't drop far but I'd loooove him in the third and even more any round after. (Pet cat, since his freshman yr at fla)

Great post. Love this guys game. W's a first rounder preseason . Would be all over him in 4/5 as a second DE after an earlier selection at the same position

With Comp Picks, the Cowboys could have as many as five 7th round choices this year. That makes this sort of thread even more useful. Grabbing a redshirt player or two could make some sense.

One major injury this past season that causes a player to fall is ok.

Scary is taking a player that has more than one in different years.

For example...Someone with the talent and ability of Dominique Easley in the later rounds.
Are we sure we want another player on this team that is lights out when healthy but has injuries that seem to pop up like Sean Lee.

Where they are great but you can just never depend on them to keep playing throughout the year due to injuries like a Sean Lee or D.Murray.

Easley has had two ACL tears...one on each knee and in different seasons.

I don't know but I think part of the problem with the Cowboys in their drafting is taking players with injury histories that tend to continue when they are in the NFL.

Sean Lee
D. Murray
Matt Johnson

I am not saying to not draft a very good player in the lower rounds if they fall due to an injury that cut the last season short for them...just that we should slow down on taking players who have had a history of injuries.

I'm with you if we are talking about not taking guys who were/are injured in rounds 1-3. But rounds 4-7 are such a crap shoot anyway that talking an injured player who clearly has the talent to play in the nfl is well worth the risk on my opinion. 90% of the time football injuries are freak accidents anyway, some guys just have better luck than others.

Broaddus talks about this with McClay saying he prefers to stay away from players with injury pasts.
