In an apparent philosophical shift, the Jets are seriously considering drafting Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in the first round of the April draft should they trade down from the fourth pick overall, according to someone with knowledge of the team's thinking.

The 49ers likely are off the list of possible suitors for Dolphins running back Ricky Williams. San Francisco coach Mike Nolan, head coach for the South team at the Senior Bowl, said Thursday he didn't think his team would be particularly interested. There has been speculation he might be willing to trade down from the No. 7 spot. The Dolphins might be interested in that spot if a quarterback, such as Jay Cutler, were available.

Mike Martz asked the Raiders for the interview, and Oakland was only too happy to oblige. Martz fits many of the qualifications the team is looking for. But even with Martz in the house, Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt remains the leader in the clubhouse.

Steve McNair doesn't plan on collecting anything less than his scheduled salary of $9 million from the Titans this year, the quarterback's agent said yesterday at the Senior Bowl. That's not a big surprise, but Titans GM Floyd Reese's response was a bit unexpected. Reese said the Titans hope to negotiate something more salary cap friendly, but are willing to handle that salary.

Sean Taylor's upcoming trial will become three times more risky for the Washington Commanders safety. At today's pre-trial hearing in Miami, Michael Grieco, the state's attorney for Miami-Dade County, will expand the charge of aggravated assault with a firearm into three such counts, one for each reported victim.

Don't be surprised if the Browns pursue Green Bay defensive lineman Aaron Kampman, a high-energy player and unrestricted free agent.

One day after releasing Mike Heimerdinger from his contract, the Jets focused their offensive-coordinator search on Pat Shurmur, the Eagles' QB coach.

Dr. Lon Rosen, a psychologist who is very close to Dolphins coach Nick Saban, helped the team with interviews this week and even watched practices for the Senior Bowl with Saban on Wednesday. Saban said Rosen was part of the process of doing character analyses of players.

Mike Holmgren's wife, Kathy, will be an ocean away when the Seahawks play in the Super Bowl a week from Sunday, trying to make a world of difference. She will travel to the Congo on an aid mission, and her husband wouldn't have it any other way. The trip was Mike's Christmas present to his wife, and the plans were made four months ago.
