Latest NFL power ranking has Cowboys just barely in the Top 10

Last offseason, despite the Cowboys shipping out Amari Cooper, the team was typically in the top eight or so of the rankings and considered a valid Super Bowl contender. This week, post draft, we have a power ranking from veteran NFL observer Peter King, and the Cowboys have slipped down to tenth in his ranking.

10. Dallas. Know why this is a crucial year for the Cowboys? They’ve won 24 regular-season games in the last two years, then scored 36 points in eight quarters in two playoff losses to the Niners. Dak Prescott’s got to do something about that, now.
Whatever you think of the ranking, there is some interesting reasoning here about the Cowboys. Their offense can be on fire for long stretches, and along with a top-notch defense, they can rack up back-to-back 12-win seasons. But once they hit the playoffs against the 49ers, the offense fizzles.

The other side of that thinking might have been about Dak Prescott. The Cowboys likely believe, and with some pretty solid history to back them up, that Prescott will not be so careless with the football as he was in 2022. Not all of those interceptions were his fault, but he put the ball in danger too many times. The Cowboys are counting on him not making that mistake a second year in a row.

Other things about this ranking of note. King has the Eagles as the solid number one in his rankings over their Super Bowl nemesis, the Chiefs. Interestingly, King has teams like the Lions at number six, and the Dolphins at number eight. Even the Aaron Rodgers-led Jets have jumped to number nine. All that seems pretty bullish on some teams who are just now entering the upper echelons of the league.

Meh…he has us as 4th best in the NFC

I think he’s really over rating the Lions and personally I’d want to see Miami put up back to back winning seasons before I rank them that high but it’s his list

Seems more than fair. The entire AFC playoff bracket this year could be better than the Cowboys.

In his ranking blurb about the Cowboys, King stated the team only totaled 36 points in their two playoff losses to the 49ers.
2022 wildcard round___SF 23, DAL 17
2023 divisional round__SF 19, DAL 12
17 + 12 = 29...not 36.

The only “ranking“ that matters is playoff seeding and playoff results. Pre-season and even in-season rankings in the NFL are nothing more than click bait for fans. Results are ultimately what ranks teams.
that is the conclusion I came to recently, which is why I did a thread on ranking teams based on last seasons results.
Most didnt get the "results " part lol.
I had the nyg above the cowboys, as they lost to the nfc champ, dallas lost to the runner up SF.

Yet another power ranking to drive some fans nuts. Not sure I can think of anything football related I care less about than power rankings. As worthless as they are they’re even more worthless this time of year.
You are much too kind. I rank power ratings as just slightly worse then draft mocks.

meh... Its May. BTW we are lucky we are in the top 10 after 27 years of falling "just short." Thats a miracle in itself.

Preseason rankings mean nothing. There’s only one thing that’s certain, when it comes down to the final 2, we won’t be one of them.

It’s a lot like the annual complaints we get from our fellow Cowboys fans about a “lack of respect” for the Cowboys. Which always makes me laugh. Because in any team sport, respect is earned based on results. In the NFL, respect is earned through playoff wins. Until we string together multiple playoff wins in a season, we won’t deserve that much respect.

Peter King is an idiot and a hater. Always has been. Always will be. Sorry for sounding so ugly, but that guy is a bonafied Cowboys hater. I honestly don't understand why any Cowboys fan listens to that moron?
This is so true. It goes back a long time. This isn't anything new.

Personally I always thought he was overrated. When he was at SI they made him out to be this big football guru. I didn't particularly care for him then and that was before I knew he was a Cowboy hater.
