Yesterday on ESPN John Clayton was asked who is the #1 team going into next season and he said that the Cowboys were 1a and the Colts were 1b.

I guess that means we're going to have the first ever super bowl tie!

No, Cowboys win, A is before B, or that's what I was taught anyway.

Agrees!

I really don't know how any analyst could fairly say the Cowboys are #1 going into this season.

While we have a talented team, the Colts, Saints, Vikings, Green Bay and San Diego have equally talented rosters if not more talented.

The Saints are being totally overlooked as repeat contenders which they CERTAINLY are. Brees is one of the fiercest competitors in the league and he isn't going to be content with 1 superbowl.

The Colts are always good for 12+ wins and a Superbowl run.

The Vikings OWNED us and there is no reason, besides crowd noise to assume they couldn't beat us again.

The Packers offense was arguably the best in the league the last month of the season and in the playoffs and the only thing that stopped them arguably was a defensive meltdown against the Cardinals. Besides that, their defense was formidable.

San Diego OWNED us at home last year. They are as talented a team as there is in the league.

We are contenders, but certainly, certainly not favorites.

Yep - and they have a rather easy schedule to boot. If they can beat the hangover, they are going to be VERY tough to beat.

Not a single one of those teams has as much talent...and none of them are even close on the defensive side of the ball - talent wise.

I think the Vikings are just as talented, and I've always respected the chargers, even picking them to beat us last year (sorry).

Woa, hold the presses...that's before it was 'shown' that the Jet corners dwarfed those of the Cowboys.

Oh yea, and then there is Camp Marshmellows. Conducted by the head Boy Scout....;)

Too much hype always worries me. The Cowboys have shown a tendency in the past to read their press clippings. That said, it is good to see Jerry and Wade getting some credit for building a good team.

Agreed, this team's biggest enemy over recent years is its complacency and thinking it is so good it can just show up for the game and not even have to work up a sweat. In my view, that is their biggest enemy this year, too. If they are truly hungry and grimly determined, they can win but if they start resting on their laurels, slacking off and bragging loudly, I expect them to lose in crunch time again.

I think the one thing they have in their favor though, northerbob, is the fact that many of them have witnessed firsthand what happened to them when they rested on their laurels. It left a really bitter, ugly taste in their mouths and I don't think they ever want to taste it again.

They may or may not have tremendous success this season, but I honestly don't think it will come from a "we're good enough to just show up" mentality. The cast of characters left from that whole fiasco (2008) are long gone and the one's left behind seem to be of a solid, well grounded mindset. The pretenders are other teams' problems and the true leaders of this team are hard working and among the best in the entire league at their respective positions both on and off the field.

We may or may not win the Super Bowl this season, but it won't be due to laziness or a sense of entitlement either way, in my humble opinion.

I know... I don't think everyone saying the Cowboys are the favorites to win it all, is in their best interests either.

However, with the 2008 season still fresh in everyone's minds, I don't think they will be complacent.

Really though, I don't think complacency was problem with that '08 team. With all that happened, it is no surprise the '08 team didn't make the preseason. Heck, they still almost made the playoffs, even with:

*Romo missing games with injury and having no real backup QB. Kitna alone might have been enough to get us to the playoffs.

*TO's play declining at a geometric rate. The team HAD to throw to Owens because if they didn't... he would create big locker room problems. There was very little else at WR on that 08 team, and defenses just swamped TO. That is always difficult to overcome, but throw in the fact that he was losing his ability as a #1 WR, and severely hampered the offense. It was the blueprint for every team to defend the Cowboys, and it worked. Garrett didn't really have an answer for it. (The 2010 Cowboys offense is night and day from that one. The WR corps is deep and diverse, making the problem of having to throw to TO most of the time a distant memory.)

*TO causing a stir and dividing the locker room. Even though he got tons of balls thrown his way, he still managed to invent a story about Romo and Witten running their own plays.

*Pacman creating all sorts of distractions and not playing very well on defense.

*Hard Knocks which only serves to disturb a teams season, starting right up front with training camp.

*Barber hurt and Felix out for the season, and only rookie 4th rounder Tashard Choice to rely on.

*Kosier out for the year and Proctor replacing him. It was like an open door for DT's.

*Difficult schedule with a murderer's row in December.

All of that, and the team still won 9 games.

Think about it. Just losing Romo for a few games with no real backup could have been enough to blow the whole season. Add in Proctor playing for Kosier, Barber and Felix out, and the divisive force of TO and Pacman, ... all following the circus that is Hard Knocks, and it is a wonder that team won as many as it did.

No... I don't think complacency is going to be a problem for this team. Injuries could derail the season, like they can for any team... but I think they will be OK between the ears. The problem players are gone, the WR's are light year's ahead of the 08 group. The defense is better, and the whole team has much more depth.

I do not anticipate an '08 like season.

It always amazes me how seriously these rankings are taken, especially since they mean absolutely nothing. It amazes me even more that being ranked #3 is unacceptable in some peoples eyes. :laugh2:
