Lawrence 2018

So there is in fact "risk", whether you "like it or not." If he has another great season, he costs much much more to keep next year.

I said that in my post. It could cost us more to keep him next year if we choose to go that route. Of course we may not keep him next year. That's an unknown variable right now.

Wouldn’t your projection of what you think they are be based on what they’ve done?
The key is stay away from big cap numbers at the end of their career so moving on costs little

Partly, yes. Age is a factor, injury history is a factor. There are a lot of different factors a team has to consider when evaluating a potential contract.

I think the Cowboys want him on the team but believe he is somewhere between the player he was in 2017 and the player he was in prior years and they aren't going to pay 2017 plus prices for uneven production. That's why he doesn't have a new contract.

Basically i do think the same.

Bold font is easier to read. Like I said before, I'm TEAM>Player regardless of the player. I'm not telling you what your priorities should be I'm just stating how I view things.

You want to see Lawrence paid. I want to see the risk put more on Lawrence than the team. But that's just me.

Sounds like you want want to try and have it both ways.

There is always risk in signing a player. You hang the risk only at the attribute of money. But there is alot more to consider for a franchise then money.

I would not be surprised if Lawrence regresses back to his pre 2017 form. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Lawrence pick up where he left off last year.
Lawrence's production *regressed* significantly in the back half of 2017. Half of his sacks came in the first 4 games. Only 4 sacks in the last 9 games.

I don't know if his *play* actually regressed. I think he just started to see the kind of attention that top DEs get. He didn't show that he could *produce* at an elite level when he was treated as an elite player.

Not elite.

With the lengthy historical of back problems, I didn't want them to give him a full contract. We'd most likely be buying high. I'm hoping other DEs step up and we can get the comp pick for him.

Great player, but DEs cost too much to bet on a player with a back injury history.
