Lawrence contract update

He's not worth the contract he wants.
I agree Risen ... if the numbers I am hearing tossed around are true (22-25 million per with over 55 guaranteed ) .. that is absurd ..
We need to invest in a true 1T .. tag DLaw one more season if he won’t play ball .. continue to look for his replacement .. just because we have the money doesn’t mean we just pay him .. I like d law and would love for him to return healthy and stay healthy but we need to be cautious

Even if he is, who do you put on the other end? Charleton? His lack of progress is what's got them in this situation. Spend a 1st for another DE in hopes that that gave them some better options when it came time to negotiate with Lawrence and so far, very little.
Roll with Charlton, it was just his second season. Give the guy reps and play him.

As much as Lawrence has been good, we are seeing a star born in Gregory. Yes he has had issues, but it seems like he's put that behind him. The guy was just a notch before Lawrence production in half the snaps after being out of the nfl for almost 2 yrs.
Even if we make Gregory the main starter and let Lawrence walk, Gregory is only under contract for one more year and will want big money if he breaks out (we would basically just be delaying the same issue where in right now).

I would be interested to see though what we could do with an extra 22-25 million this off-season though if we don't resign him, especially if we snag a top 50 pick along with it as well

So wrong, Charleton started strong in 2018 and then got injured. He had a attitude about not getting his reps back once healthy. But late in the yr he started getting reps on the strong side with Lawrence. Charlton IMO would be a better fit for the strong side. But not saying that insert him there starting. If Dallas could get a high pick for Lawrence. Use that and draft his repacement Or combine Crawford who is better suited to play the strong side with Charlton and use that RD1 on a passrushing DT.

Dallas has alot of flexability on defense now. They are not dependent on a lone player anymore.

Gregory is under control for 2 more yrs. in 2019 and in 2020 he is a RFA.

DLaw is getting Khalil Mack type money, probably haggling over guaranteed $.

Yep, I’d rather see them invest in a defensive tackle. One of those 350lb monsters that eclipse the sun

THIS! :hammer::hammer::hammer:

this is why Id be looking at a DE at 58 or in the 3rd...just in case.

my "W.T.S.H.T.F." plan...Austin Bryant,DE-Clemson.

Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have made an offer to defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence recently and is hopeful a deal can be worked out before March 5, the deadline to use the franchise tag. The Cowboys will meet with his agent, David Canter, later this week at the combine in Indianapolis. “It’s the last day you’ve got to tag him but at the end of the day we know it’s not over if it doesn’t get done by then," Jones said. "I hate to put deadlines on anything. Would we like to get it done? I’d like to have it done yesterday. We’ve just got to continue to work.” If a deal is not finalized by March 5, the sides would have until July 15 to get it done. If no deal is done by then Lawrence would have to play on the franchise tag. If he is tagged a second straight year, Lawrence will not attend the offseason program, training camp and could miss regular-season games.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think DLaw would be first Cowboy player tagged two consecutive years and the first one Stephen's tried close a long-deal during the pre-franchise tag deadline. My point is if they can't reach a deal by March 5, I have little confidence they can do it by July 15. If or once they've tagged DLaw, I'm guessing we may see a real twitter fit as in totally pixxed off with all sorts of threats.

Yeah i see it now. Spotrac still had it listed as UFA but the NFL ruled last summer that the 2020 year will be in fact RFA.

That actually makes things interesting. Taco/Gregory/Crawford rotation at DE and then using that extra money to get 2 stud free agents in the middle (option for a possible 4th DE if we can get a high pick for Lawrence) and the line might be better than keeping Lawrence and keeping everything else the same.

I'd try and trade him if the money is too high. He has a tendency to disappear for good periods of time. You could always hope that Gregory keeps his act together and Charlton develops more, and then you have your replacements. Put the saved money towards safety and, as several other posters mentioned, a huge trashcan full of dirt at DT.

Him and his agent have so much leverage it's not even funny

1. They literally have nobody to take his place and are already weak in the middle of the defensive line.

2. Cowboys have almost 50 million in cap space for this year with literally every pro bowl caliber player already signed for 2019 (cowboys can't say we don't have money to pay you).

3. They have enough cap to sign him and Amari to deal this year and will still have near 90 million for 2020 after the cap raise. They surprisingly have alot of starters already signed for 2020 and would still have good cap numbers to sign zeke/byron/dak even with Amari/Tank deals this year.

TLDR: Cowboys have no replacement for Tank and are in a good money position for both 2019 and 2020. Tank's agent has a ton of pull because of this
It's not even about leverage but him actually being a War Daddy. It's what JJ wanted and time to pay the dude.

I hope we do sign him but in the event it goes south quickly...hope we're looking at DEs.

He is literally our only consistent pass rusher and some of you guys want to let him walk.

Wow.......speechless
Don't be so narrow minded. The reason why some are considering it is because you could literally upgrade 3 positions on your defense for the price his agent wants.

It's kinda a win win to be honest. He stays and you have an elite DE on your team (which are hard to find) and a locker-room leader.

He leaves and you have enough money to significantly upgrade both DT spots and safety.

Anthony Spencer was tagged twice.
