NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports "barring a significant turn of events" Cowboys LE DeMarcus Lawrence will play 2018 under the franchise tag.

Dallas has been in a contract standoff with Lawrence for months. Lawrence wants a five-year deal, but the Cowboys need to save cap space with Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott due for extensions. Lawrence will make $17.1M under the tag and is a candidate to leave in free agency next offseason. Lions DE Ziggy Ansah is also expected to play 2018 without a new deal.

Zeke won't need a contract for 2-3 years, Dak won't need a contract if he underwhelms this year. I guess a guy who commands double teams and holding, a guy you hoped would be a force early on, isn't worth keeping once they're finally there....logic...

Franchise QB is the most important player in any team. Not only that it's not like Lawrence won't ever get a contract with Dallas. They are seeing if Lawrence can repeat. How many times did we give big contracts for 1 big year and got burnt?

Wise decision IMO. Let Tank show if he can do it again. Some players don't like playing under the tag. He doesn't seem to have a problem with it. If he can show again he'll get his money

I agree with this. How he plays this season will make a huge difference in his pay for a next contract.

He may even be cheaper to sign long term after this season. If we aren't willing to pay him now what he wants then if he has another monster season we aren't really harmed because he would want even more next year and we probably wouldn't pay that either.

Lawrence is an impact player, but if you have to lose one of Lawrence, Dak or Elliott then Tank it's been nice knowing you.

The FO aid playing this right. I remember all the Pay The Man ! Fans when Dez’s contract was up.

Yeah. The pay the man Dez fans were wrong. I would say idiots but that may be a bit too harsh--for some of them.

Unless you're worried about injuries we'll be fine. That's the risk with any contract.

Maybe. But I think circumstances are telling us they are strongly considering letting him walk.

No. They are a dime a dozen. Can get one in 7th round of almost every draft. Sometimes two or three of them in the 7th for a bag of Doritos.

Not many? None that I can recall off the top of my head. I hope they don't do that for Dak. That would be disastarous.

Maybe it's just me but unless Tank leads the league in sacks, I still don't see them offering him a long-term deal acceptable to his market value ( $100M plus range ). I see Stephen offering a take-it-or-leave-it on low end of his market value or likely tagged a 2nd time. Coz if you Tank's agent and he repeats 2017 output, 2019 tag ( likely at least $20M ) is now your floor for any long-term deal, making him damn near the highest paid defensive player in the league. Only Donald and Mack could be higher......
