Lay Them on The Table: Pick a New Player You Think Will Shine in 2022

And we're going to define new by the rookies, and anyone else who did not play in 2021, including free agents of all types.

I think my pick is safe. I'm picking Jalen Tolbert, because, at times, I was arm-chair evaluating WRs and to me he seemed like he could have been the best of the entire class. I think time will show he's going to make many wish they would have grabbed him before the 3rd round.

Just my hunch.

I was going with Tolbert as well . Obviously with receiving corps reshuffled it’s a perfect time for the rookie and if won’t take long for DC’s to blanket Lamb opening up the field Dak Tolbert connections .

I agree the more I hear about Smith he sounds like just what opening up the running game needs . I’m hoping he becomes a full time beast at guard .

Ferguson should be a big upgrade backing up Schultz. This draft could be special plenty of openings for this class as well the UDFA’s to take advantage .

I am going to go with Cox, assuming he's healthy. I think he'll slowly start to take snaps away from LVE if we see a lot of nickel and dime sets.

Now if you are asking who will be the best rookie/young player in 2022, I think I am going to say Smith, largely because he's going to have the most opportunity to shine. Williams will have a more limited role IMO.

Then I was going to say Tolbert because I think he’s going to be very good, very quickly… but that’s who you picked.

Williams is a little obvious too because IMO, he’s going to have every opportunity to make an impact on passing downs.

So, I’ll take Ferguson, because I think he’s a much better player than a lot of people are expecting. I think he’ll be the easy 2nd TE behind Shultz and I think he is going to make plenty of plays in the passing game and will help the run game too. I think he’ll get a lot of snaps. He’s tough, polished, football smart and loves the game. I’ll be very surprised if he isn’t a good player.

Glad you feel this way. I want this to be true as well. I see the talent they see, as a college prospect. Now I want to see it translate to the NFL level.

That's fine. For the record, you can still pick Tolbert. But I also think Ferguson has a chance to really shine as a player in this league, for a TE. We shall see.

I think it's important to post his highlight reel for this conversation.

And James Washington. Washington will probably be my #1 prediction to break out next season. I see Washington being a guy starting on opening night that makes a splash cuz teams will be all over Lamb and Tolbert. So my man is JW with honorable mention Bell, Smith and Williams.

maybe he is the reason they aren't in such a hurry to extend schultz.

What is the definition of “shine”? A starter? Makes the pro bowl? Is better than they were last year? A surprise?

I don’t see any of our rookies being an immediate star. Tyler Smith will start and I think he will eventually be a good player. Right off the bat, he will struggle a little to adjust. Same with Williams, Ferguson and Tolbert. The rookie who will have the quickest impact will be K Jonathan Garibay.

Second year players? I see Osa Odigizuah and Jabril Cox as potentially impactful players.

Very, very few NFL rookies immediately dominate. Obviously Micah Parsons was one of those rare ones. I have a hard time seeing any rookie this year who will “shine” until maybe after mid-season. It takes t8me to adjust to the NFL game for most rooks.

As for the UDFA’s, one guy that I’m interested in seeing in Juanyeh Thomas. He’s listed as a safety from Georgia Tech. He’s very much a dark horse candidate. I’d give better odds to a couple of other UDFA’s (like Bell at safety or Drummond at WR)… but Thomas very much interests me.

I have a hunch that Thomas just might get some opportunities to play a little nickel linebacker, along with a more traditional safety role. He is a big hitter as well as a good tackler, and at 6-3, 218, he definitely has the size to play a hybrid LB/SS spot. He could put on a few pounds and just about play WLB these days.

He’s got a good head on his shoulders and moves very well for a guy almost 220 pounds. His coverage ability is very good for a nickel ‘backer spot, although only average for a safety. Also, he was very active on special teams at GA Tech and I would think he’ll be good there in the NFL, too.

So, while I don’t necessarily expect Thomas to make the team coming out of camp… I definitely think it is possible if Quinn puts him in that Rover / Nickel LB role and gives him a chance to show what he can do there. IMO he has the body and the football IQ to do it.
