LB depth solved?

I think you are confused. Hooker is the FS with Kearse as the SS. Wilson will play a lot in the nickel and dime packages.
Kearse plays LB in a lot of our packages. I'd rather Hooker and his big body frame to be closer to the line. If we play those two guys down low, they can swop positions from one play to the next. Whike playing inside/ outside leverage and the TE in coverage.

I've heard fans say we need LB depth, well no need to fear, DQ IS HERE!!! It was said in rookie camp, Bell played and or was tested at the LB spot instead of the safety position.

As we saw with Kearse last season, he play often as a LB. With that said, do you see us still seeking depth, or will we use safeties as our LBS, please give your thoughts!!!

Both but I worry about who lines up as our middle or main LB. I don't want Micah forced to stay back and not be able to rush. I don't trust LVE for 17 games. I'm not worried about cox and the safety hybrid cover type LB's those guys we have lots of options.

LVE is the backup to Cox.

Hooker, Kearse, and Wilson are our base starters. With Hooker playing the LB role.
At least, I hope, that's how they do it.
Not initially on depth chart, but fully expect Cox and LVE to both be involved. I would even play them on special teams.
There is basically zero entitlement at the position, and thats not entirely a bad situation.

Hooker is a FS, that is his position.

Not even close. I mean, I like Quinn and think he'll get the best of the defense, but Parsons is really the only LBer I'm worry free about. Not to trash the others but I see a large amount of potentials.

LVE did start to play better on as the year went on but i think Cox is going to get a lot of playing time

For sure he did, but I'm still skeptical. We have a handful of solid players, so I'm not too worried.

No, he is not, just like he was not the backup to Neal.

Vander Esch: Run Downs
Jabril Box: Passing Downs

I know but I just don't like him at FS for some reason. Really don't want him to have to play that single high.
FS was a weak link last season.
- This season Hooker and Wilson are the primary options at FS.
- Hooker's biggest career issue has been injuries.
- Playing him more in the box only increases his probability of injury.
- I think they limited his snaps last season in order to keep him healthy, since he was not 100% at the beginning of the season.

Quinn's primary defense is Nickel.
- Kearse will be the SS and Hooker the FS.

Quinn's 2nd most used defense is big Nickel.
- Kearse in a LB type role with Wilson replacing Kearse at SS.

  • Depth
  • It is easier to mix and match players and give some snaps to rookies at SS than at FS.
    • FS really requires an experienced player that sees the entire field.
    • SS responsibilities vary situationally (Run downs vs Pass downs, etc.)
  • FS: Only legit options appear to be Hooker or Wilson, and Wilson is likely better at SS than FS.
  • SS: Kearse, Wilson, Mukuamu. The 3rd option might actually be LB Jabril Cox.
    • In obvious passing situations, they can use a big CB (Wright) to replace the SS.
    • In those situations, the CB only needs to know his role. He doesn't need to see the field like the FS.
  • Jabril Cox
    • At LB, on most snaps, only 1 of LVE or Jabril Cox will be on the field.
    • LVE more on run downs and Jabril Cox more on passing downs.
    • Last season, Jabril Cox played some snaps replacing a DB on short yardage
      • The big play vs NYG when he knocked the QB out of the game:
      • Parsons, LVE, Neal and Kearse were all on the field.
      • i.e. Jabril was replacing a DB, not a LB on that play.

The Neal experiment was a huge failure. It's not a bad idea, but still a failure. I expect them to try it again this year with someone else. Kearse appears to be better, in man to man coverage, than Hooker. That's why I can see them changing out Cox and Hooker at that 3rd LB spot. Cox fills in for LVE and Hooker fills in for Cox. They could even leave LVE in and play Parsons at DE. That's what I love about Quinn's defense...all of the moving parts. But given the NFL's style of play these days, using a SS at LB is a smart move. That's why I'm hooing Juanyeh Thomas makes the team, he'd has the tools to play that SS/LB role.

On a side note...I'd like to see us try Kyron Brown and/or DeRon Bland at FS. Because like you said it was a weak link last year. And you make a good point about Hookers injuries and playing him close to the line.

Don't forget this guy.

And Bell.

We are in wait-and-see mode as far as the LB position is concerned. I'm sure DQ has a plan, now we have to wait and see how that plan is executed and what results from it we get.
