Sources: Peterson declines pay cut
By Mike Sando
ESPN.com

SEATTLE -- Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson has refused a pay cut from the Seattle Seahawks, putting his future with the team in question, sources confirmed.

The development, first reported by Seattle radio station KJR-AM 950, comes after the team allocated $8.3 million for linebacker Leroy Hill in naming him their franchise player. The team has $20.7 million in 2009 salary-cap space allotted for Peterson, Hill and fellow linebacker Lofa Tatupu.

Peterson's contract, a seven-year deal running through the 2012 season, calls for $6.5 million in salary for 2009. Counting bonus money already paid, the contract counts $8.8 million against the salary cap if Peterson remains on the roster and $4.6 million if the team releases him.

Peterson, 30, is a five-time Pro Bowl choice. He has earned Pro Bowl honors after each of his three seasons in Seattle, most recently as an injury replacement for Tampa Bay's Derrick Brooks.

Tatupu, 26, is a three-time Pro Bowl choice. Hill, also 26, has not appeared in a Pro Bowl, but Tatupu and Peterson have said he might be the best linebacker on the team.

I doubt we would but could you imagine Peterson and Ware as our OLBs, but we don't have the money most likely.

He's a 4-3 LB. Was a freak of nature and has gotten passed his durability issues but I don't think he's a great fit. Spencer's time. Rather put money into getting Holt. We can draft OLB depth this year.

With Spencer & Ellis on the roster, I doubt JP's on our radar. Peterson went to my high school alma mater in MD so if he's released the Deadskins may actually find another way to circumvent the cap and sign him :ralph:...if he has a desire to return home!

Yea i agree with you, i would rather draft someone like Clint Sintim, to learn behind ware. Also, i hope we pick up Holt.

True... wouldn't mind a vet CB as well like Lucas and a vet OL so Proctor can be shown the door.

Sintim is good for a 3-4. Has the pass rush ability, good size and speed and some coverage skills but that is where he will need to get better. But yes, think we could get him in the 3rd and he'd be great OLB depth.

He'd also be another pass rusher to put Ware, Spencer and him on the field at the same time in some of those trio pass rusher packages Wade likes to use. I think he'll be available in the 3rd and would be real good value there. What do you think?

If Lucas understands he's going to have to be flexible and play corner in different packages and not expect to start but compete for time at a fair price I would like to have him as well. We need Jenkins and Scandrick to play but I like Lucas if Newman gets hurt and that reliable veteran corner is there to fill in. Corner will be a draft priority especially if we don't get someone like Lucas. It all has to do with howmuch he's willing to play for, how long and what are his starting expectations because he could start for a lot of teams.

The Browns release Shaffer who Parcells wanted a few years ago but couldnt get signed up before the Browns did. This guy would be awesome swing tackle depth and also can play guard. That's why Tuna wanted him so bad. Don't forget Holland or Kosier will be awesome guard depth as well. Would love to get rid of Proctor and the other non developing backup o-lineman. I'd like to draft another young tackle or guard for some competition in camp. I think it's time to let go of McQuistan, Proctor, Berger and maybe Free. Churn the depth there. Getting a guy like Shaffer who is 29 would be a great move if he's willing to be a backup and always money is an issue.

I like your thinking. Lucas would be a great signing and our OL is thin.

If the staff believes we can find a good pass rushing OLB in the draft and they want to go after some players like Holt (WR), Lucas (CB) and Shaffer (Swing tackle that can play guard), expect Ellis to be released. This would provide the cap space, approx. another $5 million, to make those moves, still sign our rookie pool and have some cap room left.

I don't think Ware will get his new deal before the season starts, probably will happen 8 games into the season. Unless Harrison gets his done rather quickly at least and that doesn't seem to be the case. We will have cap left over after these possible moves to execute a new Ware deal if need be during the season.

Lions working on trading Cory Redding to Seahawks for Julian Peterson
by Tom Kowalski
Saturday March 14, 2009, 10:45 AM

UPDATED at 11:45 a.m.

A report that first surfaced on ProFootballTalk.com has been confirmed by a league source: the Detroit Lions are trying to work a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. The Lions would send defensive tackle Cory Redding to Seattle in exchange for Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson.

Asked if a deal had been completed, Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said, "We have nothing to confirm at this time.''

An e-mail and a phone message to Redding's agent, Kennard McGuire, have not been returned yet.

The Lions might have a replacement for Redding already on the team. The Lions, who have made some sweeping changes in the roster because certain players didn't fit the system, have kept defensive tackle Chuck Darby on board.

While some believe Darby, a former player for Rod Marinelli, is a "Tampa Two guy,'' Darby did start for three years in Seattle before joining the Lions last season.

The Lions have said they need to do a better job of stopping the run and they might be thinking of pairing Darby, 33, and recently acquired tackle Grady Jackson, 36, on running downs. Darby, who is a shade under 300 pounds, can get bigger. The Lions could then turn over the tackle spot to other players, including Ikaika Alama-Francis and Andre Fluellen, on passing downs.

The acquisition of Peterson, who was expected to be cut, would immediately fill Detroit's vacancy at strong side linebacker.

The other development from this trade could be that the Lions, if they draft Aaron Curry at No. 1, would move him into the middle. If the Lions don't want to make that switch, Curry is no longer a Detroit target and Baylor left tackle Jason Smith and Virginia left tackle Eugene Monroe could be the top prospects.

Frank Cooney of NFLDraftScout thinks Sintim may have to move inside eventually, so he would work great in a package of him Spencer and Ware, put him in the spot normally reserved for Brooking at ILB

and of course he could provide depth at OLB and be a nickel rusher there too

if you cut Ellis and apply his 6 milto towards JP then you could probably get peterson for not much more cash than that.

Seahawks send expensive Peterson to Lions for DT Redding
