Leading with the helmet call?

I remember the start of the season they said leading with the helmet out of the pocket was now a penalty. I didn't see it called once this year, not just the Cowboys but for any team.. What happened?

Same thing for dancing after touchdown.. I thought they banned that. Saw it all year long and nothing.

I thought Demarco would get called for this a lot. I'm glad they barely call it (if ever), it's a stupid rule.

This is clearly a attempt of the NFL to say "look what we did" in the name of safety. If they really enforce it, they may as well switch to flag. In football you either deliver a blow, or take one.

He got fined for it. To me it didn't really fit the description of using the helmet as a weapon.

I saw it called, but I can't remember which game. Players were made aware of the rule and probably too a few precautions during the season to avoid getting this particular penalty. I don't think it was ever that big of an issue in the first place, so I am not surprised that we don't see it called that often.

Pretty much...though you can certainly lead with your shoulder, instead of the helmet.

But every rule they make under the guise of player safety is just a small remedy. Its like putting a band-aid on a broken leg.

That's total BS. If anything it looks like he's trying to get his shoulder involved more than his head. Pretty soon there's going to be more aggressive contact in Olympic Ice Dancing than the NFL...

If the back does not lower his head he then exposes his chest to the tackler. I think much of this is just natural instinct in a back protecting himself.

You also want to get lower for more leverage. It is hard to get your shoulder low without dipping the head.

Usually don't get called on when an offensive player does it.....much like grabbing the facemask, how many times do backs/receivers use a straightarm and grab the tacklers facemask and no call?

that #77 sure got hornswallowed on that one, LOL,

Stupid rule. Hopefully they continue to not call it next season. I don't remember seeing it called in a single game this year.

It was a new rule installed this past season that was specifically for ball carriers using their helmets to initiate contact.
