NFL | League pushing NFL Network to cable operators
Thu, 27 Jul 2006 20:21:58 -0700

Michael McCarthy, of the USA Today, reports the NFL is preparing to launch a $100 million attack ad campaign over the next six months in an attempt to force cable TV operators to carry its NFL Network channel. If the cable providers don't sign up, the NFL will urge consumers to switch to satellite TV operators that carry the channel, NFL Network spokesman Seth Palansky says. With the NFL Network airing regular-season games beginning Thanksgiving night, the league thinks it has the leverage to force its way into 25 million more homes this season. "We think it's asinine that Time Warner (the nation's No. 2 cable provider) carries 12 shopping channels and 50 other channels you don't want, but can't find room for one dedicated to the most popular sport in this country," Palansky says. "We're replacing the kid gloves with bare knuckles." One ad aimed at Time Warner says, "Don't let Time Warner ruin your football season. You'll miss NFL games if you don't call and demand NFL Network now." A Time Warner spokesperson said the company is still talking with the NFL Network.

Before reading this post, I was about to reply with the same portion bolded with a laughing icon.

Here's to hoping they get the deal done before the season starts.

Now were talkin!
The cable companies need to get a dose of reality.
NFL ratings drive the Television business.
I don't care if the my cable company does carry it or not,if it's cheaper to go to satellite I will.

My cable company carries it. I just wish it was a basic channel. Instead it's part of the digital package, which I'm too cheap to subscribe to :(

I hate to tell you this, but the NFL Network is on a extra tier on digital cable. But that tier (at least in my hometown) is only $2 more a month. Your may be different. It's worth getting digital cable even if it's only for 6 months to get through the super bowl.

Whats really bad is I received a letter in mail Time Warner has bought out Comcast which carries NFL network. I'm wondering if they drop it when it goes through. Anyone know about this?

Cablevision needs to get its butt on board with the NFL Network too! I've sent a couple of emails to them, but I wonder how many others have. If numerous people threaten to switch to satellite it should help to move things along (in theroy).

Be happy that you don't still live here in Dayton as the idiots at TW don't carry as most have said.. I hate TW for that. I had contemplated going Directv, but only wanted it for football season. Can't do that because its a one year committment which sucks and of course if I disconnected after the season they charge a penalty.
