Alright, we have enough guitar heads here to answer this question.

Whats the best way for a fat fingered, musically handicapped, tone deaf, impatient but very determined guy learn how to play guitar or at least start to learn the basics outside of hiring someone. I at least want to be able to hold the damn thing before sitting in front of a instructor.

If you are serious...as cheesy as it may sound get you a mel bay book, or heck you can probably find a basic chord chart on the internet....and learn the basic chords.

At minimum learn C, D, E, F, G and A.

Place your fingers where indicated for a chord and strum the strings. Keep practicing until you can make it sound decent. Then start with another chord and repeat.

Once you get those chords memorized in your mind and your muscle memory can find them on the fret board, start moving between chords while strumming.

That is a very basic start.
