Cowboys undrafted rookie RG Ronald Leary was working with the first-team offense by the final week of offseason practices.

Dallas had a third-round grade on Leary, who fell out of the draft due to concerns that his knee will eventually require microfracture surgery. Leary appears to have bypassed 2011 fourth-rounder David Arkin, who was inactive for all 16 games as a rookie. Veteran Mackenzy Bernadeau (hip surgery) is a prime candidate for the training camp PUP list, leaving the door open for Leary to snag the starting job.

I predict signs of great potential followed by catastrophic injury right when we can least afford it.

Wow, Arkin falling by the wayside and they arent even in pads yet? Welp he wasnt drafted when Callahan was coach.

Yeah this suprises me a bit the guy was a beast in college and was considered a "nasty" good off guard coming out of Springfield...little diss from a show me state boy!!

Kind of what I am afraid of/expecting.

I believe I read that both players were given time on the first team. There was no promotion. Bernadeau is likely to be the starter in camp anyway.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that. This is a blurb from a media outlet who isn't as informed as you are about what went on in the mini-camp.

Seems to me the team wanted to take a look at different players to see how they responded playing with the 1s. I don't think we can even start making any conclusions until they get to training camp and we start to see a trend.

I have no choice but to hope Leary is legit. He's a roadgrader type. We desperately need that in this offense.

You are correct. According to the team's website, Arkin got the majority of the first-team reps during OTAs. Leary got some reps with the first team in the last week of OTAs. That doesn't mean that Leary "passed" Arkin on the depth chart, it just means that they wanted to see him work with the first team.

As soon as I saw this, I was going to call bull. I hope Leary wins out, but that hasn't happened yet from any report. I don't know why it somehow would happen in between mini camp and training camp.

Still early.. You'd be surprised how many players look like crap with the pads off and completely different when the pds go on. Especially o linemen and front 7 guys.

For a while now I have noticed Leary getting a lot of praise on this board, can someone explain to me why he is/percieved to be great? Is his knee condition making everyone root for him or is he actually really good at his position? Wasn't he projected as a 3rd rounder? I dunno, I am sorry everyone I am just a little lost.

Jerry is also infatuated with failure, says the free agent bonus check Leary cashed.

This.

Big deal. Cole Beasly was playing with the 1's a lot in camp also. I don't care who the damn guards are, just block your butts off.

you can't tell diddly about line play until the pads go on

That's very true, but Arkin started out as the starter at training camp last year, and was at the far end of the bench, when the season started.

Not encouraged or discouraged at all.

Don't have much in the way of expectations for either right now.
