I need some remedies other than water/bananas.

Everytime I try to run lately the front of my legs just lock up. Its really bad.

Ive been useing icy hot to take away the pain but i need something just to prevent it all together.

If anyones got any info it would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you've got a good old fashioned case of shin splints, in which case the general recommendation is rest... a compression sleeve over your shins will give you added support while you work out... ice helps after the workout, and you can take most over the counter pain meds to minimize any pain and swelling...

You can help yourself some with your diet, though; think calcium, and high protein, and give some thought to a good potassium supplement...

stretch for 10-15 mins, i do that and go injury free since my knee surgurys

I will get shin splints from time to time. I just push through it most times and it seems to do the trick.

Also I do a simple exercise that a trainer once showed me. Just put some type of weight on your foot, a rolled up bath towel or a small dumbell should work and then slowly lift up your toes. Do this for a few reps and then switch feet.

Another thing that helps a lot of leg issues is good shoes and socks. Get fitted for shoes and upgrade the supports in the shoes. The cheapest part of the shoe is the paper thin supports that come standard with them.

Shin splints sucks... I had them all the time when I was reffing. On game days for me, I usually loaded up on fluids, mostly water, took some advil or aleve, and then by halftime of my first game (basically after I warmed up), I was ok.

Like Bear said, only thing that worked was rest. I would get shin splints the first half of the season. Before Xmas. Then after the two-week break, I was good to go.

You can also look into purchasing better running shoes to help alleviate some of the pressure on your legs.

Get some potassium pills....

I looked at Wal Mart and couldnt find any.

I exercise A LOT and eat healthy mon-fri.

Im just going to rest them for a few days and stretch at night and apply icy hot to them and eat some bananas.

I eat at least 6 bananas a week so im shocked it could be from a lack of potacium.

Could someone try googleing something? I looked at couldnt find jack.

Until this I was agreeing with others because it seemed like you were describing Shin Splints.

However some things to consider with Muscle groups and exercise.

IF you are working out hard every day, than maybe you are pushing your self a little too hard and over doing it. You could do work of a different type a couple days a week in order to break the running and stress on your legs but still getting exercise.

Another thing to consider might be how much you are sweating and how hot the area is while you are running.

You might be losing too much salt in your system, if you eat healthy and do not get a lot of salt in your system. Lack of salt in the system with large amounts of exercise in the heat can lead to muscle cramps.

I recall we had to take salt pills on occasion while doing army training in new mexico and ft bliss.

I suggest finding some other cardio work to do that does not involve the legs for a day or two a week to give them a break, however if you are still having troubles after the rest...

Keep your fluids up, don't wait to you get thirsty, see if you can find some salt pills and take one before going on runs.

Of course you could go to the doc and get a good physical and ask about your problem and maybe it is something none of us know right now that is the problem.

Hope that helps.

Tomato juice is high in potassium... but I was talkin' about gettin' help in pill form, I'm on a potassium supplement my own self... my problem was muscle spasms in my ribcage, any time I did any kind of physical exertion at all... got on the pills, haven't had a problem since...

Thanks brain and silver thats the kind of stuff I was looking for.

I do workout in a extremely hot area and lose a ton of water. I drink a ton of water though but I exercise hard for about 2 hours a day 5 days a week and thats after work.

I think my body is just needing a lot of rest and im going to give it to it and refill on my elctrolytes, potasium, and water.

I agree with most of these people, (the bourbon is not something I've tried.)
However, The body looses its Vit E with lose of water. I take 1,000mgs a day for leg cramps and have for years, as soon as I quit, thinking I'm wasting my money my legs start hurting again.
I also eat at least two bananas a day, the papers I have read on bananas say 4 bananas a day will give you the full amount of pot----that you need. I take the bananas for blood pressure though, I have never thought of them for my legs. I fully agree good shoes are really a must have.

Pedialyte, and believe it or not cures hangovers to.:D
