Leonard Davis is no Tackle; I live in Phoenix

I live in Phoenix so I have seen Davis play on a weekly basis and I can tell you that he is exactly like Larry Allen during his latter years. I have to laugh when I hear fans say he is quick or agile. He was one the reasons the Cardinals offensive line was so bad last year because Davis would get killed by edge rushers. He has amazing skills but the dude is just big and was playing out of position. He is one of the best guards in the NFL. He is an All-Pro at guard but he is awful at tackle. If Davis gets his hands on a defender, that defender is done. Like Larry Allen, Davis' hands are impressive and he is not going to get beaten by any defender that tries to put moves on him. The problem is he is too slow to play either tackle position. If we could start Davis at guard, he would just make our running game dominant. But he was awful at Left Tackle and proved he was too slow to handle quick defensive ends.

I certainly hope he can be at Guard and stay there..... even when Flo is done. Hopefully a good replacement for Flo will crop up from a draft pick (existing or future).

I'm glad to hear you say you think he will be good at OG...that's where we better put him. Appears to be a concensus that's where he belongs. Sounds like he will be a monster at RG...

so if he's too slow, then how does he pull as a guard on run plays, the thought's of larry allen stumbling and falling down in his last years still haunt me:eek:

I can dream, can't I?

Yep...we've seen crazier things. My scenario is drafting Blalock, but if Levi fell to #22...take him and don't look back.

Even if he's there at 22 and we sign Colombo he is still tempting. He could be a dang good OG at 6'5/325

Because slow as a OT is different then slow as a OG... Big differences!!! Big is slow in handling speed rushers not slow in pulling... A OG plays within a much tighter space then a OT....

Or he could replace Flo a year down the line (as his contract runs out), if necessary . . . .

Leonard is a great guard from what a can tell, there will be no interior blitzing with he and Gurode there, too much meat.

Sainthood? Five or six people here (more?) would succumb to heart attacks if that happened.

Leonard Davis' draft report

Draft scouting report

Has a tendency to tire and wear down and will do so a lot more quickly when he is over 370 pounds. Can be lazy. Will look for the easy way out when he tires and just leans on people instead of bending his knees and moving his feet and looking to finish his blocks. Is off balance because of sloppy footwork at times and the problem is compounded because he doesn’t have great agility when he weighs in at 370 pounds. Struggles to handle a counter move. Late reacting at times. At times looks like he lacks some explosiveness in his lower body. Is not an overly instinctive player on the offensive side of the ball yet, and he seems to lack some read-and-react quickness. Does not spend enough time in the film room to really study an opponent.
Summary: Rare talent. A planet person. People this size with this much athletic ability who play football on a high level come along about once every 10 years. Could be a super pro if he really goes to work, learns to control his weight, increases his stamina and endurance and becomes a real student of the game like Anthony Munoz did. But also could have a lot of problems with pass protection if he remains at left tackle and does not become a real student of the game. Poor agility drills could be a concern, but some players just do not test well on the 20-yard agility drill, which most NFL teams favor.

Thanks. Can he pull and work screens?

Oh yeah, at guard he is dominant! He just had issues at tackle. If you play him at guard, we are going to love this guy. Yes, he can pull and work screens. He just had issues with edge rushers. We are going to love watching this guy create holes. In Arizona, he was their best OL so they forced him to play left tackle.

while some of the techniques are different in the 2 positions,I do believe foot skills and quickness are essential for both positions. I agree that OG play in space more often then tackles. That being said he is awfully big,I hope he can get out on the edge fast enough if he plays guard. I hope he pans out like everyone thinks, we all know we need a spark up front, and his size is intriging

Not going to happen unless Dallas moves up to at least #15, probably even higher.

Every year, fans overrate offensive skill players then watch them "drop" while OTs go higher than they expected. Staley's going to end up near the end of the first/start of the second but people still think he'll be there in the late second.
